Popped up to the Renault Worldseries practice at Sonington on Saturday and as it was persistently raining I decided to take the car rather than cycle or walk as I had been intending. The weather being the way it was there were not too many people around despite the 150,00 free tickets distributed.
At the main entrance to the circuit was an unmarked white van which I assume was ANPR as it had 2 camera units pointing out of the rear windows.
Interesting targeting. On a better day weatherwise they may have expected several thousand vehicles through there for the event and a handful for the nearby long term parking operation.
Presumably they the thinking was that the motorsport nature of the event and the free entry might attract a number of people who were 'of interest'.
I didn't check on Sunday as I walked up and forgot to look. However, as many vehicles were being directed into the outlying car parks I guess the coverage would have been less complete. Presumably the force of mountain bike equipped officers were there to patrol the car parks during the event.
If I was being really mischievous I might obeserve that the Renault spokesman interviewed during the event pointed out that the whole thing was 'Invitation Only' - you needed to get tickets in advance - so one wonders if certain people might have been sent tickets in the hope that they would turn up ...
