What's being "fully comp" got to do with it? If your policy doesn't say you are covered to drive other cars then you aren't & even if it says you are you might find it's Third Party only cover. If he can cover your for the day on a comprehensive basis then that is probably the best way to go.

This, just to add don't just assume, make sure he has added you, ask to see a copy showing your name on the certoficate

If you have a DOC extension, it'll say so on the actual certificate of insurance. If it ain't there, you ain't got it. No need to trawl thru the policy.

Twig is right, and even if you do have DOC cover it is usually Third Party Only.

Getting yourself added to the Comp policy on the other car would be the safest option.

Well it’s my father and third party is fine so if he does that (he thinks he can) I don’t need to do anything?

It's much safer to get your dad to add you on his insurance fully comp. You might not even have DOC on your policy (have you checked yet?)

It’s definitely better to be added as a named driver on the other policy, and it might not even make a difference in cost.
I was named on my dad’s policy for years for no extra.

I have both car & bike insurance, both of which allow me to drive other vehicles with owner's permission but 3rd party cover only. Which one to use while driving my dad's car??

It doesn't matter providing you only claim on one in the event of an accident.

Have you checked the small print? My car & bike policies specifically limit other vehicle cover to either cars or bikes respectively.

Ah! That mythical beast, The Small Print. (Extinct, after The 2015 Consumer Rights Act).
