Discussion
It’s not often I find good stuff in the news but this looks like a result. Police not great again, they refused to help her find the phone.
Very well done young lady!!!

I see this so often with lost phones on Facebook etc. etc.
Why do folk not take advantage of backing up to Google or iCloud?
If they dropped their phone in the sea, does that mean they'd lose everything?
Couldn’t agree more. Mine’s set to back up automatically every day.I see this so often with lost phones on Facebook etc. etc.

It’s still a pain to have to go buy a new phone and then set up using iCloud- mine went in the sea and it took a few hours to sort out. Had all my tickets for travel on for the following day. But yes I just don’t get why people don’t back their phones up.I see this so often with lost phones on Facebook etc. etc.

The main reason I've kept this phone for over 6 years, despite that it really needs replacing, is the idea of remembering passwords for all the stuff that currently works seamlessly, as well stuff that miraculously syncs with other things.
I'm getting on and really don't understand how it all happens anymore, so the thought of losing my phone causes a lot of anxiety.
In fact all tech makes me anxious these days

There was a video a while ago of a guy who's high value camper can was stolen but he had 2 airtags in it so was able to track it location. Cops said the same that they cant help and insurance will cover it.
He said something like " that's not a problem my friends and I are here now (address given) and I'm prepared to robustly defend myself if attacked during the legal recovery" hung up and cops arrived 10mins later.

Last year I had an attempted theft of my phone near Oxford Street, it was buy a guy all in black on one of those electric bikes, I noticed something to my right, caught a glimpse of the guy on the bike, felt a tug on my phone and he was gone, fortunately I had a good grip on it and he failed to take it.
It actually shook me up for a bit, a few people noticed what had happened and it was quite nice that they made sure I was ok.

Sign into new phone. Wait while the restore happens.
I mean, it’s more hassle than not losing the phone, but I don’t see how it could be much easier.

Yep that’s what I did, but then you need to do face recognition again and then each app that used it, particularly the banking apps need reconfiguring and some other apps saying “new device detected”. Wait while the restore happens.

It’s easy enough but time consuming and does get a bit laborious each time you open some app for the first time and have to reconfigure.

I come from a time when a new phone meant inputting all your contacts again using the old text method
Then they were saved in the SIM and you could transfer SIM to SIM. Dark Arts I tell Ye!
On my handheld Nintendo, I could play against mates. As long as I had a special cable that was barely 3ft long

I remember having to write all the numbers down and then put them all into your new phone too. I also remember changing my phone a few years ago, and the girl in the shop had sent me a text, and I said "hold on a minute while I delete some messages so that yours comes through". She looked at me gone out!
I also remember having some infra red controllers for my Sega Saturn without cables, and it felt so futuristic at the time to me. They didn't work very well, but at least I didn't have a cable though.
