Wotcha

now I realise speeding is obviously the most heinous crime on the planet and there's a wave of 20 mph and 50mph limits cropping up across the country where there were 30 and 60 before

OK

but why do we need a limit sign every 3rd of a mile ?

between Banbury and Byfield on the A361 there are now thirty three 50 limit signs........

33 in a 10 mile stretch........

I thought councils were skint ? Each sign must cost £100 at least
So thats £3300 quid that could have been spent on pot holes or something worthwhile .

Probably for Intelligent Speed Assistance. It uses cameras in cars to make annoying noises if you are over what it thinks is the limit. Hard enforcement sure to follow.

Legal requirement to have repeater signs if not 30mph or NSL

A 30 or 60 limit needs no signage. You should know the limit is 60.

50 is a restriction, the limit has been lowered - and thus there must be signage at the start and then regular repeaters.

The problem now is that they relaxed the rules in 2016, effectively allowing each authority to decide whether or not, or how many, repeater signs are placed. That, together with councils' obsession with introducing new limits every 5.75 minutes, means that it's becoming increasingly difficult to know what the speed limit on any particular 25-metre stretch of road is: there's no consitency anymore.

Add that to what seems to be a relatively new idea of having different speed limits in opposite directions (so far only seen on roads with some sort of division berween opposing traffic, bliddy confusing when first encountered as you think you're losing the plot).

Seem to remember reading something about the council or highways don't have to maintain the roads up to standard if below the normal statutory limit.

£100 per sign including post and installation seems optimistic.

Doubtless there's someone on here who's involved in signage who could tell us roughly how much local authorities get charged by contractors for this sort of thing.

People hereabouts got the hump when after requesting a village 20 limit their gardens became the proud recipients of repeater signs because the law.

There's a move up here in Bonnie Scotland to reduce all the 60s to 50mph. And you think you got it bad!

Unfortunately we have agreed to continue to follow their regulations when it comes to cars.

By the same argument, if we were still in the EU we wouldn't have speed limits on motorways.....that's how it works, isn't it??? wink

Not involved in signage, but I'll have a guess (feel free to join in smile) I'm going for £2-£3k.

Per sign that wouldn’t surprise me at all.

10 years ago I rented a unit on an industrial estate and the council got involved with ‘doing us a favour’ putting a sign up with business names on it at the entrance. £10k was the going rate apparently. For one sign.

You've now got me thinking a bit more...

Truck to site with, at least, two blokes and shovels, or a mini digger - just in case. Concrete has to come from somewhere; this is now looking like a nice little earner. wink

I'm revising my guess to circa £5k for one sign and £2k for the second, adjacent, one. Compliance, init?

In China it wouldn't cost £50. For two. (that's an observation, not an opinion)

Nothing like that. Our entire village was way less than 10k. I can see if I can find the exact cost if you like.

I suspect that even that would be missed by many drivers. There's a road nearby which is a 40 and has a 40mph sign on every second lamp post. So many people insist on doing 30mph or less even on a clear dry day. I don't get it.

It is a hateful stretch of road. Had always felt dangerous to me. Can’t really put my finger on why I felt that, and I was nearly involved in a multi car accident a few weeks ago in the ice just after Warmington. How the car sliding towards me passed by without hitting me is a mystery. I’m pretty sure he got the car behind me, but I didn’t stop - there were still cars crashing as I left and it was just not safe to stay.
