Hello All

So I imported my car myself from Ukraine (I'm British but married into the situation). I thought I was doing the right thing by jumping through a ridiculous number of hoops including ending up with a tax bracket of about £335 for a low powered m=Mazda but I'm not hear to moan about that....

I've just realised I've been driving around for more than 3 months without a needed MOT. I'll obviously look into getting one now and hope that doesn't open yet another boat load of red tape ("oh its an import....."). Odd that its coloured green on the website. I wonder if the police also see this unusual status but with the green tax (and obvisouly insurance) just ignore it - that might explain why I've got away with it for so long.

Any tips or corrections on this as ever gratefully received.

Sorry, have I missed something?

You imported a non-uk car without an MOT & for some reason didn't get one done............

So what did you actually do when you imported it wrt official paperwork etc?

No ideas for a name

It was first registered (new) in 2021, so a reasonable assumption it didn't need a test until 2024 in the UK.
Do cars newer than 3 years need an MoT when they are imported?

OP - Just book it in for test, I can't see there being an issue.

Says there it's a 2021 car imported in 2023 so no MOT would have been needed to register it

I saw that (I wasn't sure which date was relevant) but even so, you have brought a car from a LHD country into the UK, it is obviously going to need some conversion/checks of conformity, hence why I asked what you DID do wrt official paperwork.

Yes it does, but from a LHD country, so it is quite clearly going to need checks etc to ensure it is appropriate to drive on our side of the road.

The green box shows that it does have a current MOT, did you by any chance have the MOT done whilst it was on the Ukranian plate?

If so, that could be the reason that the full details of the test haven't transferred across and the message is as shown on the website.......

I won’t even ask if you got an IVA test when you imported the car…

Would it not be covered by EU type approval? Or is that another Brexit benefit?

That's good then because it won't need one

MOT section probably green because less than 3 years from 1st registration in the UK. Just go and get an MOT.

According to the link earlier a lhd EU import needs iva, so I imagine one from the Ukraine will as well

Over three years old, LHD, non-EU country, not using the Ukraine refugee scheme (or the OP would have said). Why do you believe it won't need approval?

A bit OT:
A relative of mine bought a 10 year old Ford Focus some time ago off someone on Facebook.
Turns out he was Czech - he drove to Czechia during COVID & registered it there for over a year. Czech plates, paperwork, insurance etc.
He then moves back here & puts the original UK plates on it & after a year or so sold it on to my relative.
She taxed it at post office using V5 green slip & all was well until she retaxed it 6 months later online.
DVLA said the car had been exported, then reimported, but the owner never declared the re-import, so import duty could be due....
After several weeks faffing around between DVLA & HMRC, she sorted it out. Due to age of car, duty not applicable, so it worked out ok eventually.
Unusual case, but shows what a minefield red tape can become
