Speeding in West Yorkshire - Zero tolerance
Discussion
Today, more than one member of my family (no, not me) has attended a speed awareness course. One done for 27mph in 20 20mph zone, the other 35mph in 30mph zone. Our window cleaner was also done in the last couple of weeks. 34mph in a 30mph. So places on SAC taken and duly completed.
All offences evidenced by laser camera. One from a hand held in an unmarked Police car, the others a rather bland looking camera van (not decorated with all the usual markings).
Chatting to family whilst they were at the SAC I asked them to find out a couple of things, and this is what they were told:
1. there is no 10% = 2mph tolerance
2. they don't 'form an opinion' on the target car's speed - they just take the speed of every car
The result on this course was many many people done for speeds such as 32mph in a 30mph....and 21mph in a 20mph zone.
So, zero tolerance in Calderdale West Yorkshire. If you see a mobile camera - chances are you will get a ticket so it seems.

1) At the risk of being pedantic, all of your non-SAC examples show a level of tolerance. None are zero tolerance. All offences evidenced by laser camera. One from a hand held in an unmarked Police car, the others a rather bland looking camera van (not decorated with all the usual markings).

2) Don’t believe a word of what people say on a SAC, especially the tutor/trainer. They talk absolute crap and make up stories about how “someone on their course last week was done for 32 in a 30”. The trainers don’t get a list of the offences committed by those on the course. They just trot out the same nonsense spouted by people attending their courses. “I got done for drinking from a bottle of water while stationary at a traffic light” and “I got done for 31 in a 30”. Yeah. Of course you did.

If my cleaner told me she got done for 34 in a 30, I simply wouldn’t believe her unless she showed me the letter. She probably got done for 35 or above and is just exaggerating to express her annoyance at getting caught.

Usual nonsense, IIRC we've never actually seen any proof of prosecution outside of the usual 10+2 guidance. But feel free to post up something.Johnson897210 said:

I've been on a SAC for 78mph in a 70...iirc others have also been nicked at that threshold, and at least one person posted a screen shot. It was in a relatively recent thread too.davek_964 said:
There is a tolerance. There absolutely has to be a tolerance, because speedometers in cars are not 100% accurate.
Not sure about this, speedometers cannot show a speed that is less than the actual speed of the vehicle (maybe they would if modified or incorrect wheels fitted)trails said:

Please post your SAC documentation for posterity. I do not recall any thread with proof of this, feel free to link to the thread concerned.trails said:

Wow.
Pistonheads used to be a friendly place. I am relaying the narrative from family at the SAC today.
Of course I don't have any evidence of other peoples offences. That's the point really. It smells very funny so wanted to raise this to see what the PH massive thinks.
Thanks to the poster for putting up the West Yorks documentation. That means more than the hearsay.

Thanks for this. So...if a vehicle is clocked at say 32, 33 or 34 mph in a 30 mph zone, would the driver expect to get a letter in the post? From the SAC today...that is what several people were saying happened to them.https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/about-us/polic...
The course leader said the 10% + 2mph tolerance is an "urban myth". Pretty sure I have seen that written down in ACPO guidelines, but probably more than 20 years ago.
So...I'm not claiming anything, just relaying what was said or heard. Please don't shoot the messenger.

I get that. I really do.Course leaders said modern cars have digital speed displays and if your car doesn't but has a needle, then put your phone on dashboard to show speed by GPS. That all sounds outrageous to me!
