Spotted these behind a lamppost the other day.

According to Glos Plod - ‘We do not have to advertise where ANPR or AI cameras are’.

They DO have to tell you if you ask about a set of roadside cameras however - where you have been recorded.

What are these cameras & what are they recording?

They are pointing in both directions - they are clearly NOT just a temporary traffic ‘counter’…

This is a weather monitoring station for winter maintenance of the highway.

Gave a look here https://www.findlayirvine.com/weather-monitoring

That’s a stellar catch! This version (in my picture) even has the cameras on closed loop & the sensors for road surface temp. The full monty…

Everywhere I go these days - cameras… I have cameras on the brain - thanks for the spot - appreciated!

I was talking to my lad - about speeding & anti social car behaviour. This particular camera set is in a 40 limit, where we do not exceed that - infact it should be a 30 zone - 40 is to fast. We regularly have ppl up our backside going through this stretch, annoying.

Then - when the road opens out, it moves to 60, those same folks click in at 44, 46. Long straight roads - no joining roads - great visibility - then they do 45…

Anyway - I can ride easier knowing this is not the start of an ‘average speed’ or some such…

Thanks for the info - really appreciated.

Pretty sure they are face recognition prototypes.

Yes - just before it, before the ride up to the quarry, almost outside the Budgens.

I think Alicat is correct - when you look at the tech data sheet on the website of the provider - these are weather station devices.

They do look suspiciously ‘high tech’ - but they appear to be weather station ‘devices’…

When I get 5 minutes - I am going to contact Glos Highways and ask for any data that they have on my vehicles.

I will update on what they say…

That’s a lot of gubbins.

I saw these the other day on a residential road. Must be battery powered and some kind of temp install. I could shin up and cut one down biggrin

Temporary - usually becomes permanent - right?

What has given me the ick is that at the ‘other end’ of the 4077 at Upper Swell - is that there is a more ‘speed camera like’ looking device that has sprouted - high up on a pole.

Also - speed camera warning signs have sprung up before and after Upper Swell. Anyone who goes this route knows the Swell has the single lane ‘head on’ bridge & the tight blind corner by the stone barn. This part down into Swell is after what I affectionately call eau rouge and the kemmel straight - goes from 60, to 40 and then 30 - through Upper Swell it should be like 10 mph with the blind corner and the head on bridge - I’d have zero problem with a 30 camera in Upper Swell.

But - It wouldn’t take too much imagination to think that the Toddington roundabout to Upper Swell section - the road I have driven for more than 30 years without incident, and in my opinion one of the best roads in the country - is being primed for an average speed or some such.

This is the camera at the Swell end of 4077 - just before Stow…

This ‘stuff’ NEVER gets less OR disappears once it’s put in…

I fully suspect they will have the usual stuff - the reason I will ask is I want to know what they are doing with it.

If it’s for 3rd party sale - advertising or whatever - who gives a monkeys these days? They have all the data they need on me - am sure.

Road tax, insurance - yep couldn’t care less, all my fleet are legal - so there - again - I don’t care one bit.

If it is going to Plod - however - and being used for speed or other - I want to know so I can alter my user habits on this road - I simply don’t want to be hassled by Plod, so if it’s going there - I can help them to make sure they don’t ever need to worry about ‘my data’ - one less burden for the tax pounds we are paying.

I will be a good citizen and help out.

A new camera springs up - I want to know what it’s for - that’s all.

If I camera’d up outside my house on the highway - I’d pretty quickly have someone knocking on my door - which is fine.

I want to know what this is being used for - so I can help them ongoing.

Nothing more..! bow

The black box at Swell is 100% a speed camera. Glos highways have installed them in lots of villages in the past six months.

They may not be active yet, so will either send you a community partnership letter, or a fine. They don't need to be yellow and the signs outside the village are sufficient.

I thought all speed cameras had to be yellow, has this changed now?

Was pretty sure of it.

My other family members also drive that bit - so I can give them the reminder too.

Like I say - there, at that point, 10-15 mph is too much from how I know that road.

Fine with that.

It’s the gubbins at the other end (Toddington roundabout) I’d like to know what’s going with that lot…

In all fairness the five or six I have seen across the county are all in sensible places, not money making locations.

The other one does look like a highways weather monitoring thing linked above. Only one way to find out!

No need for them to be yellow / painted visible. I believe fixed ones need to be in a signposted area, but that signpost can be miles up the road.

The only requirement of signs is a correctly labelled speed limit sign.

An interesting thread!

I was a senior manager for a local authority in the 1990s and was responsible for managing winter maintenance.

The weather stations will be positioned at strategic locations on the highway networks. Quite often at places where road conditions will deteriorate first of problem areas e.g. large bridges.

The data from the weather station will be gathered and used for forecasting road conditions as well as confirming accuracy of predicted road conditions.

The cameras allow the road to be visually monitored e.g. when the weather is balanced between snow and rain the sensors seeing what is happened is crucial.

During my time video was not recorded and there definitely wasn't any ANPR. We did capture a range of date though.

I think the one at Swell is a community speedwatch camera by the looks of it that Gloucestershire Constabulary can provide to communities.

https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/roadsafety/the-...

The device on this website seems to show the same type of camera. I have also seen one of these at Bourton on the Hill.
