I don’t know but the French and Italians have caught up.
I’d estimate that every other camera that I have passed in either country over the last five years has been sprayed over or vandalised in some way. It was particularly prevalent in France with the rural unrest over Macron’s policies a while back.

Drive anywhere in the UK for more than 5 minutes and yes, you'll see people speeding. I'd say the majority of drivers will exceed the speed limit at times.The problem is twofold:
- Drivers who complain about speeding/bad driving, yet don't realise they are guilty. The number of mum-mobiles which fly up and down the main road on our estate far exceeds the number of "boy racers" they complain about on facebook. But I think it's ok to speed when you're running late for school/work/football practice/etc. Likewise the number of people on my commute who pootle along at 45-50 in a NSL, but barely slow down when we get to the 20 or 30mph villages with concealed entrances, no pavements, schoolkids crossing, etc.
- The media (and now social media) drive the hysteria around road safety in general, so the authorities need to be seen to be doing something about it. Sticking a speed camera up ticks that box, rather than the inconvenience of looking into the root causes of any problems.

It’s not hard tbh. On motorway journeys, I just set my limiter at a GPS indicated 75 or 76 (speedo showing 80) and don't even think about needing to watch my speed or look for cameras. Same for any other limit. Just click the limiter on at about 10% over.
People should try it. It's a much more relaxing way to drive.

76mph in a 70 from Avon Police administered van and 24mph in a 20 received almost immediately after the limit was lowered from 30 (on a wide, straight suburban road where motorised traffic is separated from pedestrians and cycles by a metal fence or whatever).
If I had a pound for every time I have been told I “couldn’t get a ticket for 76 in a 70 I’d be on a beach in the Caribbean.
Similarly the girl who normally is found sitting opposite me is awaiting the result of a NIP for 43mph in a 40mpn average speed camera zone of a major dual carriageway relatively recently reduced from 50 in these parts. Everyone keeps telling her she can’t have received a ticket for that too. I’ve seen the NIP.

'Speeding' is a pejorative term which implies reckless driving. It is usually better described as 'travelling above the prescribed speed limit'. The process of butchering speed limits started in the 1990s, curiously the time from which it became possible to measure speed automatically with machines and issue fines. And as anyone with a brain must realise, modern limits are often unnecessarily low for the relevant road. In short, the more you lower the speed limit, the more 'speeders' you create.scenario8 said:

Yet the complete failure of anyone to ever provide any proof of a ticket under the threshold makes me think someone has either:
- misread their ticket
- muddled what they've read
- repeated the speed but lowered to to make people feel sorry for them (which then gets passed on).
I would of course change my mind if I ever saw evidence to the contrary.
