Ran out of potatoes this evening and so took a quick trip to my local supermarket about 8pm.

Arriving at the sole open checkout - the fags and lottery tickets one - I commented how quiet it was in store. 'You've missed all the excitement' said the chap behind the plastic wall. 'We've just had four shoplifters walk out'.

The staff aren't allowed to do anything, the police aren't interested and a security bloke would cost more than the losses. So the rest of us just soak it up and no doubt pay more as a result.

In fact, I can't see much reason, other than honesty and morals, why I don't just follow suit. I'd be £2K a year better off, just like the scum who walk out with bottles of spirits and arms-full of meat to sell to their scum mates.

Genuine question - what can be done?

Controversial but I’d intern them in forced labour camps.

I'd do the same.

The government would be initially liable for the cost of crime and criminals would have to work to pay that cost off. Human rights handwringers wouldn't allow it though.

I'll have another go...

'Ran out of GF vegan organic quinoa this evening and so took a quick trip to my local supermarket about 8pm...' wink

No self-respecting scrote would nick that st though.

Definitely an issue serious enough to warrant 2 threads.

Contradiction; if a security bloke costs more, then letting the shoplifters get away with it is saving you money silly

Chop off their hands. Just like in the other “what can be done” thread.

How about setting up a group of people with special powers to apprehend and detain such troublesome folk. Then the same people can process the evidence to prove the wrongdoing so that magistrates can deal with the nefariousness appropriately.
This can all be funded by those in the community who deem it fair to pay for the service. Some of course will avoid such a community charge, but the rest of us can feel assured by the protection this service affords.
