Apologies if this has been asked before.

What is the name of the camera that looks like a black box, sits on a small tripod about the same height as a car window?

Which direction does the camera catch you, way from the camera or towards?

Can the operator if the van catch drivers both way?

Its a gatso. Usually sited in front of a van to obscure it from view.
Takes a rear facing photo just like all the rest.

PS - Gatsos per se tend to be large, painted yellow (though some are not) and permanently raised on poles at the roadside at van roof height - S

Except Gatso also do a car mounted system (frequently used in Holland) and a portable roadside unit set up on a tripod. (Also often used in Holland)

The small portable is, afaik, used by only a couple of forces at the moment but that might be changing. If memory serves it is a radar based unit but there is a similar size and concept which work on a beam across the carriageway basis though I am not sure whether it can have cameras attached to capture evidence for both directions of travel at the same time.

Dorset & Wiltshire scammers both have a mobile Gatso unit/s

Dorset delight in parking it at the end of a queue of parked cars or next to some roadside furniture whilst hiding their van up a side street or out the way.

Nope is wasn't like any of the pics.

It was a black box about the size of a shoe box - bit bigger maybe. It was sat on a tripod at the side of the van.

The bloke in the van gave me a nasty stare as I drove past, so I smiled back! I was driving toward the van not away so I think I will be OK, not that I was speeding.
