Hi all,

I saw this chap lurking on a bend towards the end of a dual carriageway earlier today. He had what looked like a speed gun held at waist height pointing towards the traffic, and then he just held it pointing downwards diagonally.

Am I right in assuming this is either some community speedwatch person, or maybe just someone else holding something unrelated and I'm now just worrying because I'm expecting a letter through the post?

Does this match the 'attire' or setup of the average mobile speed gunner? I didn't see any police marking / epaulettes and he wasn't wearing a hat.

Thanks!

Looks like a copper with a laser gun to me. Community Speed Watch usually hang around in pairs at least, one gunning, one writing down speed and plate.

I'm sure the device he was holding was more cylindrical and didn't look like any of the proper speed guns I've seen, also he was just 'shooting' from his waist/stomach height which can't be particularly accurate. This is why I am wondering/hoping.

Shooting from the hip! biglaugh

The speed will be accurate, perhaps not the identification of the vehicle though.

If you do receive a ticket, and I don't believe you will, make a note or keep the video of the cowboy operation so it is correctly considered.

Here is another view, the best I can get from my dash cam. Looks like he’s holding something at chest height here - not sure if they need to look properly through their eyes to aim or not?

I have seen the same in the past couple of weeks in a Sussex town near to me . A 30 mph road with a fixed camera and speed signs that flash your speed at you .

100 or so metres on from where I saw the policeman with the camera was a police car with an officer talking to a motorbike rider they had stopped .

I have seen the same last year in another location. Two officers about 100m apart .

There were no other officers or police cars nearby, and when I went back for a look about 15 minutes later he had gone

Latest speed camera equipment is held at waist height, it's so accurate that the previous guidance of limit +10% +2mph no longer counts.

It can also check to see if your tyres are bald and if you are using a mobile or have a seatbelt on. There is a coming updated version to see if your dog is secured as well.

Essentially you may as just as well surrender your licence now and save the courts some time.

Game changing tech.

Probably.

It will be one of these: https://www.bushnell.com/additional-products/speed...

Popular cheap radar for community speed watch.

Round and cylindrical as you describe…and can be used from the hip no problem.
