If someone had not bothered to tax their car for years, drove it on the public road, and was recorded on dashcam - would the Police seeing that evidence consider it a Road Traffic Offence assuming the rest of their driving was perfect? Or...would that Offence need to be witnessed by a Police Office? I.e. they have to be caught in the act, not on camera?

I am curious as to the extent that public collected and submitted evidence is used by the likes of these Operation Snap programs.

Watching with interest. For a friend, of course.

Not really because that would quite often mean that a Police officer is present themselves and can make a stop to check if a car is taxed, has MOT, insurance.

What though if Op Snaps gets footage of a car that is committing these kind of offences, so proof that they were on public road at a certain time, but the driver is otherwise behaving themselves?

That said, i have reported a camper for being on the side of the road with NO tax NO mot and NO insurance.

Reported it to operation crackdown, and was surprised by the response from them.

The vehicle has been inspected by the local authority.

The process for dealing with an Abandoned vehicle takes time and your patience is requested and appreciated as we have to establish whether the vehicle is abandoned at all. This will involve various computer checks and involve sending the registered keeper a warning letter highlighting the report about their vehicle, there are also legislative timescales which apply in most cases for the owner to come forward which we have to adhere to.

Generally, if the vehicle is found to still be insured and taxed then it will not be considered abandoned. Insurance can still be valid for a vehicle even though it might not have tax and Mot as depends on the policy. Vehicles with No Mot alone will be dealt with when they are seen driving.

If the vehicle does not have vehicle excise licence then the DVLA need to be contacted. Please use the DVLA tax checker on the internet to check this as it is now not a requirement to have one visible on a vehicle. (https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax)

If the vehicle has no MOT then please report via the alternative OP Crackdown site (on the main screen to the website) and a warning letter may be sent to the registered keeper. (https://reports.operationcrackdown.org/abvprs/)

If the circumstances change for the vehicle and you no longer believe it to be abandoned please contact us so that we can update the database, one of the ways to do that is to respond to this email.
If you wish to see the current state of the case then enter your ref number including the two letters before.

Thank you for your co-operation and for taking the time to submit this information to us.
