V778 certificate number not valid when attempting to assign
Discussion
Hi,
Wondering if anybody has any experience of this.
I had a car out on a salary sacrifice and had my private plate assigned to it.
The car has now went back and they have removed the plate from the car.
They sent me a copy of a v778 form via email
The certificate says they are the grantee but someone has filled my name in the nominee portion.
I tried to assign this to my new car today and it’s came back stating the reference number for the certificate could not be found.
Any body any ideas?
Cheers
I’ve got onto the lease company as well but yet to respond.

IIRC the certificate will go back to the person/entity with their name on the V5 - it gets confusing because the Registered Keeper doesn't have to be the Owner...
I am presuming the company was the RK in this case?
Look on the MOT / Tax checker website on gov.uk to see if it has been assigned to something - if it has, someone has been up to no good.
If it hasn't, DVLA should be able to confirm if a replacement certificate has been issued. Well, assuming they will talk to a Nominee (which could be anyone) rather than the RK the certificate was sent to...

Yeah the lease company was the RK of the car.
Thankfully when searched it says the plate isn t attached to any car.
The V778 has them registered as the grantee of the plate but someone has filled my name in with pen on the nominee portion but still not working online. I’m guessing do they need to submit that to the dvla to allow me to assign it?
I always thought the system didn’t care and would assign automatically if you had the certificate number and the v5 of the new car
Starting to worry as it s my wife s plate and has sentimental value

What is the issue date of the V778?
Is it definetly not the old one that becomes invalid as soon as the reg is assigned to a car?
As soon as the reg is put on retention, a new V778 is issued with the name of the RK, the lease company in this case.
I assume the lease company has forwarded this to you?
Double check they've sent the new one and not the original one that was used to assign the plate that somebody has pulled out from a file.

So I was assume it’s the current one.
I have asked the lease company and they have now said the DVLA have issued a new one and it will be posted to me in the next few days.
It’s odd.

What you now say sounds like they have now submitted the form to DVLA and you should have more luck with the updated one when you get it.

It sounds like you were trying to assign it with their details on it as your name was just in pen.

Just to update on thisWhat you now say sounds like they have now submitted the form to DVLA and you should have more luck with the updated one when you get it.
You were spot on! New certificate arrived with my name printed in the nominee part and was able to put the plate on the car’
