Cyclists are jumping red lights, mounting pavements and putting pedestrians at risk at London's busiest accident hotspots

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15227019/...

"Posing as both a cyclist on a Lime bike and as a pedestrian crossing the road, our reporter's hidden camera footage caught riders flagrantly ignoring the highway code"

Is this just a London thing as I've not noticed this anymore than cars up north? Haven't been to London for a couple years and I don't remember it being particularly bad.

How do you "pose as a cyclist"?

Pretending to be a cyclist by, erm, cycling?

Anyway, a certain proportion of cyclists have always nipped through the odd red light. I may have done it myself occasionally at a deserted crossroads. Some people have always been outaged about it. I'd be mildly interested in the Venn diagram of those people, and people who tell us that it's fine for drivers to break the speed limit if they judge that it's safe to do so. Occasionally the Daily Mail runs a story about it to generate some outrage clicks. It's not exactly Woodward and Bernstein, in spite of cunning plan to send an undercover reporter.

Used to drive an artic through London and i have had them drag their bike under the trailer to get from one side of me to the other when stopped in traffic.

Seen them ignore reds, hit pedestrians, and kick cars that were perfectly in the right and not doing anything wrong.

I dont go to London in a lorry anymore, it was only a matter of time before I got hit by one of the idiots and was blamed.

Im a cyclist. Doesnt mean that I have anything in common with them much like Im a car enthusiast and someone who gets stoned, drives through redlights gets behind a wheel of a car.

I commuted through central London for 8years on a bicycle and lived.

Bendy buses though almost got me numerous times.

Which rock have you been living under? It's been like this for the past 20 years or more. You must have been looking at your phone the entire time the last time you were in London.

And in another breaking BBC headline: the sun comes up in the morning...

Ultimately, whilst it's stty behavior, most of the time it doesn't hurt anyone, unlike say motor vehicles jumping red lights.

In an imaginary utopia of unlimited resources, by all means police it.

But in the real world? I can't get to frothy about it.

Jumping red lights and riding on the pavement where it's SAFE to do so, who cares! I ride my mountain bike on the pavements very often as I'd rather arrive home in one piece, but I'll hop back onto the road if I approach a pedestrian.

There are some awful riders, just as there are awful drivers and awful pedestrians. Live and let live and all that...

Edit: I do not ride in London, nor would I want to.

Obviously car drivers don't jump red lights.

Was in London this weekend, Quite telling really - taxi from Padders to Soho was held up due to cyclist under truck (assumed dead), and then that night, as we were crossing a large empty road at night, in Mayfair, a guy rode at us, no lights, shouting "dont' cross! get out the way! Or you'll die!!" - WTF? no lights, pedestrian priority, and he was barely visible unless smiling.

Walked around 7 miles per day and witnessed/avoided many light jumpers, and people whizzing past on Lime bikes in no cycle zones in Hyde Park. They are all a fking nuisance
'barely visible unless smiling'? Odd turn of phrase!

Assume you'll be happy if I drive at 60 in a 30 limit if I deem it SAFE to do so?

Absolutely. I do both. Here is the 30 where I do 60.

Me too , on my MTB, in somerset, but in a busy city packed with peds its highly inconsiderate and dangerous.

There is always someone who thinks their time is more important than other peoples and feel that justifies them ignoring the rules, well that is until they come unstuck and they or someone else gets hurt.

That level of arrogance should be called 'the prince andrew syndrome'.

That’s not an equivalent is it? If you had said 32 in a 30 limit you might be closer to matching the gravity of the cycling offences.

On the subject of 'jumping' red lights it's high time we had a 'Left on Red' rule (Right on Red in the USA and Netherlands to name 2).

99% of the time on a bicycle at a red light on a 4 way intersection it is perfectly safe to turn left on a bicycle when it would not be in a car.
It has the advantage of improving journey times on a bike which makes it more attractive as an option.
It has the advantage of separating cars and bikes when the lights turn green.

As with car drivers there are some dangerous pricks who are one poor judgment call away from an accident, the big difference with a bicycle is by a very large margin you are likely to come off worse in an accident.

In the countries you have referenced by example, who has liability if there is a collision?

Who cares.

Move on, it doesn’t make any odds to anything. s doing drugs driving or without insurance altogether a far bigger issue.
