Gave my car away to the workers in my block who sold it to a mate of theirs while I was out of the country. Seems that said mate didnt send in the change of ownership, and I've just woken up to a £312.50 charge on my credit card from Tfl Bops Channel for Auto.

Cant log into my TFL account at the moment because im abroad but when the office opens I'll give them a call. Will be cancelling when I can get through. But what are my options if he doesnt re-register the car?

You gave a car away and didn t change the V5. How did you think this was going to work out?

Do you still have the V5, or a copy of it and/or the 11 digit reference number? And do you have the name and address of the new registered keeper?

You can use a VPN (tunnel bear do one with a few gb of free usage) if you want to log in from abroad.

How do people manage to get into a situation like this? It’s a proper set of skills…

Write to DVLA and explain, however you might need more proof than 'not me guv, I gave the car away'

Also, be ready for the speeding fines a coming

Gave a car away to a bloke who then subsequently sold it on and zero paperwork completed for any of it.

Mate, how do you think this will work out?

A world of pain awaits methinks.

Onus is on you as the keeper to complete change of ownership isn't it.

I wonder how many letters will be waiting for you when you get home.

Speeding?

Parking?

Apart from the stuff others have already mentioned, you've also kept the car live on your auto pay account, hence the charge on your account.

actually not working out too badly so far, he's paid me back for the fines, and said if any more pop up just ping him. Had the car taken off my CC charge account. Good point on the speeding fines, though I can prove I've been nowhere near the uk for the past 6 months!

The car was basically rotting in my block, and I told the porters grab all the paperwork and flog the car (properly) and split the money amongst themselves as a Christmas bonus.

Fair play, but no good deed goes unpunished.
