Happy New Year

Just asking what experiences people have had when telling their insurance company that they have picked up another 3 points for speeding, raking them to 6 points.

I have stupidly picked up another SP 30 a few weeks ago. - went through what I thought was only a pedestrian crossing monitoring camera. (Marked as such) and it turns out it also acts as a speed camera! Nobody waiting to cross or in the vicinity, lights were green and I had good vision in my defence. On a road which is dual carriageway and shortly after becomes a 40.

Anyway other points date back to August 24.

Just wondering how much extra I might have to pay as will also increase my wife s!

Thanks

ETA - currently pay £500 with full no claims which is protected.

How long is a piece of string? There are so many variables in insurance I don't think an an accurate figure can be provided.
I've even seen insurance go down at renewal after getting points (because of all the other many factors that impact the price).

10-50% when going from 3 to 6 points....can vary significantly. With your current premium of £500, you might be looking at somewhere between £50-250 extra, possibly more depending on your insurer's view of multiple offenses in a short period. The fact that both offenses are relatively recent (August '24 and now) might work against you - insurers tend to view this as a pattern rather than a one-off lapse.

You might have to suck up whatever extra they decide to add on to current policies, but definitely when up for renewal shop around with all the online aggregators.

You might well find theres not much of an increase overall.

MSE is a good starting point, and they also offer advice on how to minimise quotes.

They can t and won t add anything to his current policy. He doesn t even have to tell them until renewal. He can tell the, if he wants, but they cannot charge him anymore, he s already accepted the price and paid for the year (even if paying monthly).

How much extra it costs next policy year is a wild guess. Bert Bert seems to have nailed it though. I ll guess at 3 shillings sixpence more.

Cheers. - fair point - I saw my premium go up slightly with 3 points.

Seems a bit harsh that an innocent person gets dragged into it, but the whole 'speeding' thing makes a mockery of justice anyway so I guess the system can do what it wants.

I have checked my policy and it looks like I do need to tell them now and I will see whether they add anything on now. I shall be looking around at renewal time anyway.

They can’t. Your price is fixed for the year unless you change something through choice eg move house, or change car. The only way they can vary the price for an offence is if you lose your licence.

Made no difference to mine. Auto renewal came through at £272 (IIRC), I went online to update my details with the additional points, got the updated quote - £272.

I'm told drivers with 9 points are a lower insurance risk as they generally can't risk more points, so my advice is to continue speeding for another 3.

No you don't. UK insurance law says there is no obligation to tell insurers mid term of any convictions, unless you're disqualified. If you do, they cannot charge extra until next renewal.

Apologies if I seem a bit naive but there is a simple answer to your question . Get on a few price comparison sites for a quote by inputting your amended circumstances to include 6 points rather than your current 3 .

Impossible to answer with any accuracy, too many variables. You will have wait until renewal.it may have little or no effect, conversely, a young / newish driver in a dodgy area could see a huge increase or even find their present insurer no longer wants them as a customer.

As an aside, why do you think this will impact your wife?

Because she has her own insurance policy on her car and I am a named driver so presumably they will increase her premium as well.

I wasn’t aware that the insurance company can’t increase mid term.
