My bike's MOT is due to expire and I don't want to renew it for about 6 weeks, when the weather is better. It's fully taxed, stored off road.

Do I have to SORN it?

If I do, I get the tax back and then re-apply for the tax?

No, you don't have to SORN it, you can just leave it taxed and insured and let the MoT lapse.... then re-MoT when you're ready. You just won't be able to legally ride it on the road without an MoT, despite the fact it's still taxed and insured.

Leaving a bike taxed is a waste if you can't use it!

If you SORN it, you will get a VED refund, or the d/d cancelled if you pay monthly. It is legal to ride it to a place for an MoT test and back again whilst SORN as long as it is insured. Yes its only a few quid but I avoid unnecessary charges if I can. smile Then buy VED again after getting an MoT.

Cheers, I'm not going to get the chance to ride it for at least 6 weeks and the weather will be better too. I also want to shift the MOT date.

I always pay my tax by monthly direct debit, then sorn them over winter.

There is no connection to your MOT.. you can let that go until you're ready to ride again.

You can still usually ride to your (pre-booked) MOT without one and SORN'd as long as it's still insured.

Wrong, you can legally ride it to a pre-booked MOT.
