Buying A Car(Privately)That s In The Disabled Tax Class

I’m just wondering if anyone has had any experience in buying a car(privately) when the seller has it under the disabled tax class ? and how easy is it to get back on to the regular tax class?

I’ve done a few Google searches and I appreciate it says it can be changed over by going into the post office but the bit I’m confused about is the day of buying the car do I change over details on the V5 there and then before taxing it or wait till I go to the post office to change over details on the V5 ?

Because I assume if it’s changed over on the day of the sale before I have a chance to tax it the paperwork is just going to get sent out to me still on the disabled tax class ? Which means I will then have to amend it again with DVLA ?

And also I doubt the seller will want to give the whole V5 to me to take to the post office a day or so after once I’ve already bought the car

It's only few days to go before the end of the month, wait until then, buy it, tax it and send v5 off to dvla.

I bought a car that wasn't altered but taxed previously as disabled tax class. When I collected the car we tried to tax it and change the tax class on line at the dealership but couldn't do that. Had to get someone from the dealership to take me to the local post office where it was taxed, advising the PO chap to change the tax class from disabled. Wasn't a problem at all, just a bit inconvenient not being able to do it online.

Hi, just did it the other way , changed private to disabled. Had to go to post office can't do online but very easy.
Remember to list the change on the paper work the seller keeps.

So the day I buy the car do I go to the post office with the seller and change it over before buying it or try and convince him to give me the whole V5 so I can go to the post office once I’m back home a day or 2 later ?

I did it the day after I got the car, delivered late afternoon so PO closed.
It will be taxed from beginning of month, if quirid it's in the post as it can't be done on line.
As long as it's insured and MOT your ok.
I just took the new owner bit of v4 to PO sorted.

Take v5 or v62 to post office, they can change the tax class and tax it.

Have literally just done what the OP is planning.

Bought a WAV van. Tried to tax online and couldn’t.

Drove to the nearest post office. No form required, the guy behind the counter charged me the correct amount and sent off the v5 with a note attached saying the tax class had changed.

Job done in 5 mins

Correct seller and buyer plus full v5 or the form I referenced is required. They can do change of keeper, change of tax class, tax vehicle all in one go.

But won’t the seller want to change the V5 details over before the car is taken away ? He’s unlikely going to give me the whole V5 without changing new keeper details over first

I bought a 'disabled' car (an Audi A8 no less) and didn't spot it's tax class until tax was next due. I went to a local post office where they agreed to change it then re-taxed it at the correct rate. A new V5C arrived in due course.

Nothing had been mentioned at the time of sale, the car had belonged to the seller's father and he (son) maybe hadn't known or realised.

This, I bought an ex-disbaled car from a dealership, he drove me to the local post office, changed the class and paid the tax!

I presume this was a very long time ago! VED (road tax) hasn't remained with the car on a sale since paper discs were scrapped at the end of 2014.

My father had to do this after buying a used Ford Orion in the 1990s, but there were local DVLA offices to do this sort of thing before it was all centralised in Swansea. The Post Office can now do a lot more procedures.

Bennno I don’t think you understand what I mean

If I bought the car on a weekend for example when the post office is closed the seller is going to want to change over the new keeper details there and then isn’t he which means the process would have started with DVLA

If I went to the post office on the Monday to tax it then new keeper details would have been changed already when I bought the car

So it would mean the new V5 would come out to me with the disabled tax class still on it which means I would then have to change it and send it off again

The only way round it I think is to somehow convince the seller to give me the whole V5 when I buy the car
