Chan was driving the Clio the other day, and we drove pat one of the speed cameras on the A48, doing well under 50 (the limit), and the camera flashed twice at us, I straight away instinctively checked the speed even before the 2nd flash went off, and it was definitely under 50! What can we do if we get a letter through the door? We know she wasn't speeding! Bloody things! :(

It was the weight of shopping in the boot. you were detected as a hgv :-)

you shouldn't get a ticket...
but you still have to wait 14 days to be sure.
If you do get over to pepipoo.com and post in the forums...

good luck

They were teaching you a lesson for not driving the Tam!

Seriously though, the two flashes measure your distance travelled between the two flashes which is a set amount of time. They will have two pictures to look at and thus work out the distance you travelled by your position relating to the lines on the road, before and after.

If you were doing under 50 cant speculate why it flashed you, but surely the reader of the film will calculate directly. They are set off by radar, which is a completely separate system, maybe faulty?

Cheers guys , I hope the camera's faulty! We don't put the RA2 in the Clio, because it takes so long to get up to speed that, by the time you do, you've arrived at where you wanted to go!
I just don't look forward to any potential hassle and having to justify ourselves for something we didn't do!

Missus complained of the self same thing tonight, 32 in a 40, flashed by a mobile tripod. WTF?

why do i fear that (in this day and age) they'll send out the NIP anyway in the hope that someone will just payout without questioning.

Tho have been sat in a queue of traffic in Bury when the camera flashed twice - 0 in a 30, never heard anything from that.

There's a Gatso in Barnes near the mainline station and I've seen it flash twice on a couple of occasions for southbound vehicles that I'd have sworn were under the 30 limit.

That's what's worrying me! When we have 3 kids and a full time job each, this is more hassle than we need! Will let you know if we get a NIP.

i wonder if theres any truth in the figure my missus goes on about there only being a 1 in 10 chance of the carmera actually having film in it - and then them emptying and retieving the film in time within the 14 days.

it could have been set off by a car going the other way.
there's a gatso just down the road from me and if the car driving towards it is speeding it still flashes, so if you are the car on the same side as the camera you may think its flashed you.

If you were under the limit and you get a NIP, you'll have to plead not guilty and request the pictures and do a simple time vs distance calculation.

They are supposed to do this, but often *forget*. It was more than likely set off by a car approaching from the other direction. I sometimes set them off for a laugh

How *does* that work? There's one on a NSL A road near me that flashes HGV's doing over 40.

Also, when cameras first appeared in Chester, they were set to go off at random (without film, of course), so people would notice them!! Caused absolute uproar.

What happens if someone overtakes you whilst passing a scamera?

Happened to us once, think th GF was driving, approaching a well known scamera in an underpass so well warned, an Audi RS2 (v.nice) passed us at about 75 (50 limit on an Mway ).
Scamera flashed so i took the reg of the Audi just in case. Nothing came of it though.

In response to the original post, if I get a new car I will be budgetting for a good GPS unit with logging facilities because I am getting more and more suspicious of dodgy speed readings from Scameras and Police.

It doesn’t, at least not in the way tony2468 tried to fool us into believing!

There are two methods:
1) measure the amount of radar that is returned. (HGVs tend to reflect more cos they’re a bit bigger)

2) induction loops buried in the road, determining the size or metallic mass or the vehicle (I don’t know if this method is used much)

They are now planning to do people for loitering, if under the limit, and speeding if over - so double wammy.

To be safe you have to drive everywhere dead on the speed limit.

Re: Truvelos (pressure sensors in road)
This doesn't work (so well). I have seen many drivers blast by these cameras when the other lanes are full with traffic, they don't get flashed! It might be something to do with the single set of sensors monitoring multiple lanes.
Please don't hold me to that!

So now they instil a climate of fear not only on our streets, but the roads too
I know we were under the limit, as I have had the RA2 in the Clio before, and the speedo over reads the mph quite a lot (about 5mph+ when doing 40!) and we were going at well under 50, so at best, we wern't going any quicker than 45mph!
I pften wonder how rich I'd be if I stole a car and ran it for a year without tax/insurance/service bills and no letters dropping through the letterbox stating I have 3 points and a £60 fine, for doing nothing wrong!! (jumping the gun a bit there, but bloody annoying how the honest motorist is preyed upon!)

There's a gatso near me that when you approach it from the opposite direction on my motorcycle pretty much always double flashes. Its not forward facing either!
Must be the shape of the motorcycle and stange radar reflections off buildings etc and granted I'm usually at 30mph or below too.
Very strange indeed.

It's part of the Government policy 'to scare the hell' out of innocent motorists and drive them mad with worry - part of the 'Keep the Innocent Nervous' initiative...

I've also been a victim of this policy, nothing came of it though.
