I'd appeal that one on the basis that the signage is unclear and as the yellow markings have worn away you could assume that the parking bay markings had too.
Unfortunately the slam dunk that land on which railway byelaws are in force is not "relevant land" in the application of the Protection of Freedoms Act was taken away a couple of months ago, so you can't use that defence.
Before I appealed a few of these and gained some knowledge, Mrs W paid up for "failing to park in a marked bay" although the marked bays were covered in snow at the time she parked.
