New speed cameras for London

Takeaway points:
- only in some boroughs to begin with
- bi-directional: can ping approaching cars as well as cars that have driven past the camera
- can scan five lanes
- longer range than existing cams
- no road markings to show the “kill zone”.

In all seriousness, I totally agree. That's why my car never goes into the central 20mph zone any more. I park and tube/walk/uber from there, it's just not worth the stress.
Good to see good use of money being used to counter real crime in paying for the technology and installation of these cameras. These will surely solve the crime everyone is up in arms about.
If only they could put this much effort into solving other crimes.
Go shoplifting and it’s fine as long as you don’t speed away over 20mph.
Spend more money trying to educate the public to watch where they’re walking rather than persecute the motorist.

If it’s any consolation, if these cameras prove to be profitable, err, effective, local authorities all over the country will wish to share in those profits, err effectiveness.

Just to pick up on a few of your points that you seem to think are new.Takeaway points:

Cameras have been able to scan both directions for some time now.
Cameras have been able to cover more than one lane for some time now.
Camera ranges vary but they are always within areas that are signed as having cameras.
Cameras haven't needed road marking since forever.
So what is actually new then?....... Basically nothing.

The IAM unfortunately have been falling increasingly into parroting the mindless "Speed BAD" crap at every single opportunity, with little nuance or countenance with "How about some driver education & addressing falling standards?". Their magazine now pretty much goes in the bin as soon as I receive it - on the occasions I have flicked through it's mostly adverts for walk in baths and celebration of self driving cars.

s. Only reason I've kept my membership going is the discount on breakdown services & at Bike Stop in Stevenage (although this may have changed now they've been taken over by Infinity), but I wouldn't think twice about cancelling if it wasn't for the occasional financial benefit.
I stopped observing for them some years ago when spare time became more precious, but also due to becoming rather disillusioned. I should really press on with the HPC journey I began last year!
