Last week I was on the M25 when a foreign lorry punted a car down an embankment. This is a Smart motorway with no hard shoulder and traffic was halted by HATO. I stopped and left a suitable gap because I always end up being asked to move.

So here is a pic. The incident is about 400m ahead of me. To the left is a Polish lorry that passed the last Red X gantry about a mile back and would have gone through another Red X. When traffic was moving I flashed him to move in front of me, but he decided coming to a complete halt next to me was the best solution.

For reference, the EV in Lane 3 in front of the white car kept their foot on the brake for the whole 1hr 15 mins we were there. biggrin

Another HATO came along and asked the Polish driver to move left and as I had space I moved right. Then later they decided to release us via Lane 3 and 4 (which was fully clear). My evening was ruined so I when I got to the next junction I spun around to go home.

On the way back I could see the first Police car stuck trying to get through about 2 miles back, 4 miles back was a fire engine and 5 miles back was an ambulance. Lane 1 with the Red X was completely filled with cars and lorries.

Now I understand the emergency services are trying to deal with the incident, but how difficult would it be to have a camera on every gantry that you can display a Red X and fine these people into oblivion, or ban them? A 14 day ban would have a short sharp effect - we are a congested nation and getting bad drivers off the road isn't a bad thing.

I was on the M25 the other week and there was a lane closed. I wasn't in the lane affected but all vehicles were moving over at the merge sign on a gantry and well before the red X on the next one.

However all of a sudden one car moved into the closed lane before the X and sped past the queueing traffic followed by a whole load more and before long the closed lane resembled a normal open lane with all the traffic in that lane passing the X on the gantry like it wasn't there.

It does make you think what goes through peoples heads sometimes especially last weekend again on the M25 when I passed someone who had decided the hard shoulder was a great place to let their child out of the car to use a potty.

At least they didn't also have fog lights on also!

Idiots like that don't realise the level of light they give out in a position that is designed to project it as efficiently as possible in an EXTREMELY visible position.

Both my Tesla and my ID 7 would be stationary with the brake lights on, without me touching the brake. I suspect most cars that auto hold would be the same. The tesla I wouldn't have even touched the brake pedal to stop.

But not when you put the handbrake on.

What handbrake? Doesn't exist.

The problem is, they* "cry wolf" FAR too often, thus diluting the message when they are needed.

  • 'they' might be interpreted as smart motorway signs in general, rather than the red X specifically, by some.

Maybe the red Xs came on after the traffic was already stopped in the lane?

The handbrake ceased to exist when dual circuit brakes came in, and the need for an effective secondary brake was diminished. The acceptable performance of a parking brake then became 16% (as compared to the secondary brake performance of 25% required of a handbrake).

Cupra born doesn't.

BTW what do you mean by handbrake? I assume you are rubbing off the proper meaning? A braking mechanism that comes into effect by the use of a hand operated lever?

A secondary brake system operated by an alternate means than the service brakes. Plenty of cars don't have a hand operated lever anymore, with electric 'handbrakes', but this has been around for a while and isn't news.

Key details about the Cupra Born handbrake:
Location: The electronic parking brake button is located on the side of the gear selector lever.
Operation: Press the button to activate the parking brake while the car is fully stopped.
Auto Hold Function: To enable, go to the smart assistance menu in the infotainment system. When active, a gray symbol appears on the dashboard, turning green when the parking brake holds the car automatically.
Releasing for Movement: To release, turn on the car, press the brake pedal, and press the parking brake button.
Manual Override: To unlock for towing/pushing, select the 'N' position on the gear selector, press the brake pedal, and activate "Activate rolling" in the infotainment system.
Turning Off the Car: Engage the handbrake, ensure the car is in Neutral (or Park), and exit the vehicle.
