Just noticed that in my local car parks (Faversham, Kent, controlled by Swale BC) amongst the list of misdemeanours that can attract a £60 fine is vehicles with an unladen weight of more than 1535kg. Initially I thought this was to keep lorries out, but many 4wds, people guzzlers and some porkier saloons weigh at least this much.
Has anyone received a penalty for excess weight private car in a public car park? Is a clampdown on heavier vehicles imminent? With CCTV coverage and access to the DVLA database this could turn into a moneyspinner for councils overnight.

I notice this once when I was near the New Forrest for a weekend. Initially I ignored it thinking it was absurd, then noticed the locals staring in disgust as I got out. Something in my head told me that either my car wouldn't be there when I got back or the wheels would have those nice yellow triangular hubcaps fitted.

Decided to sod the local economy and go shop elsewhere.

1535kg is not heavy in terms of modern cars.
A 350z is approx 1500kg.
Anything from 5 series/E class up will be over that.
Surely if you can afford a car like that you will buy more premium goods?

1535kgs!!!!

So a Mondeo Estate kerbweight 1587kgs on face of it would get a £60 fine.

Lunatics, asylum, in charge.

Of course. They even empty out the petrol in the "reserve" tank! - Streaky

PS - if anyone needs that explaining, you shouldn't be posting on PH - S

My A6 is 1860kg (it is the heaviest model, V6 TDi quattro, tiptronic estate). My 348 would be OK at 1380kg.

The question is, why 1535kg? Does whoever controls the car park have a car weighing 1534kg or a neighbour they particularly dislike have one weighing 1536kg?

Well I would guess the following.

A lot of off street parking used to limit access to vehicles which weighed under 30 cwt.

see schedule 1 of bye laws for Barnet which is dated from 1970.

Now 30 cwt = 1524 kgs, make an allowance for a spot of finger trouble in a calculation and that may be your answer.

Of course it could all be a destabilising plot by a Mr O B (Un)Laden.
