Caught by a roadside camera van at 74 in a 50, hands up, my mistake. Looking to understand a likely outcome as while I can see that this is not necessarily a summons, though I am led to believe that this also isn't a 3 pointer and a 100 pound fine, possibly an SJPN but if anyone could help clear it up that would be helpful.

74/50 is too fast for a course but within the threshold for a £100 fixed penalty with 3 points.

Google / AI will probably generate nonsense about a Band B fine with 4-6 points or a ban 7-28 days. If so then ignore.

Thank you agt, that’s very much appreciated. As you correctly point out the various AI platforms appear to be misleading in this respect.

It's a mistake when you get caught and a risk you take when you don't.

I doubt if many actually drive 50% above any speed limit without it being their intention to do so.

It's easily a mistake if you're distracted, e.g. come off the M180 towards Shorpe on a straight bit of dual carriageway with nothing but fields around it for a couple of miles, in your head it's a 70 until you see the 50 limit signs...

If you lack the attention span to the point of distraction, or ability to recognise when you need to slow down , what else could you miss?

I agree, there is no excuse for not seeing a speed limit, especially in a modern car which will no doubt bing and bong to tell you off way before you had a chance to not notice. Choosing to take the risk of being caught is very different.

Don't get me wrong, it's not an excuse, I'm just saying it's easy to imagine a scenario where it's a mistake as opposed to someone seeing the speed limit signs and saying "screw this I'll do what I want"...

PH is becoming overrun by sad sacks these days, the tagline used to be ‘Speed Matters’ now all folk want to do is have a snipe at someone, it’s pathetic.

It is a play on words that has obviously passed you by smile

It is not Speed Matters as in speed is the main objective, it is Speed Matters where we talk about speed and all it's ramifications, positive or otherwise.

Why do you think it is pathetic to discuss somebody caught driving at 50% above the speed limit when they themselves have started the thread for discussion?

Because you are, ‘ha-ha’ is absolutely childish but sadly the limit of some folks critical thinking.

It's odd, particularly for a car forum, but this section appears to attract those who revel in the misfortune of others.

I also got a NIP last week - first time in years - turns out I was on a particular bit of dual carriageway that turned to 30 for approx 100m where it intersected with another road. I mistakenly thought it was a 40. According to the paperwork I was doing 39 in a 40. Proper villain now.

Oh I love it when posters use the "critical thinking" argument, as if they need to convince themselves they sound clever and are superior to others without in reality having the ability to display this superiority in a well thought out response hehe

They started the thread to ask what the likely punishment was - and made no excuses.

Sadly, as already stated - any speed related post these days attracts the "you should never speed", "if you can't see a speed limit sign you shouldn't be driving", "burn them at the stake" type comments.
