Ed Sheeran insurance cock-up - what did he do wrong?

I have to confess I'm a little confused:-
- He SORN'd it, so there was no need for 3P cover.
- It's his property - surely he can do what he wants with it?
- The garage confirmed to him they had insurance cover for vehicles in their possession.

...so what exactly did he do wrong?!? If it was any asset other than a motor vehicle the lack of insurance would be the owner's risk, surely?

He hadn't SORNd it, until much later. If its taxed, it has to be insured.

I'd have fined him a lot more for converting it to an EV.

I searched for Sheeran - figuring 1 word would be less confusing for the hamsters. Wasn't in the first page when I did it.

Here's a question.

How likely is anything going to come of this.

Asking for a friend.

Friend PXs a car for a second hand car.

Dealer sorts out the tax on the new car,

Friend goes on line to his insurers website and swaps over the vehicles. Thanks he's paid an extra £53.
Doesn't check his credit card statement.

3 weeks later he's on his insurers website, looking at his pension statement (his workplace pension is with the same company)

Something makes him look at his car policy as well. Shock horror. His old car is still showing. The transfer never happened.
Did he get confused whilst doing all the paperwork for buying the new car, reading all the small print on the warranty ? Was the old car insurance paid for with a card that has changed? Was there a glitch in the insurers website.


Anyway. Immediately he realises, he swaps the cars over and pays (now) £48.

He checks AskMID and it shows car not insured. Next day it shows car insured.

He tells me that in 44 years of driving that's the first time he's ever not been insured.

So. Will the DVLA know that his car wasn't insured whilst it was taxed? Will he loose his licence, be sent to prison, etc etc.

Unlike me it's highly unlikely that said friend will have any pending speeding tickets or the like, but he will have driven through various ANPR speed cameras on the motorway.

Should I dob him in ? He looks like Ed Sherran but lacks his personality.

Is it fair to say Ed ignored the letter/chose to challenge in court?

I thought it was always your typical £100/50 fine for something like this.
