Long story very short a distant contact in Scotland (a HNW individual) lost all cards and needed a hotel bill to be paid. They couldn’t leave the country and nobody was stepping up for him, his family and 2 daughters so I paid the hotel directly via link and he promised to pay in writing upon return to the UK. It’s £8200

Incredibly he’s not paid which I find astonishing as they were deeply in the crap and it’s just not how I can imagine anyone behaving.

The debt is freely admitted and numerous promises to pay in writing over the last 2 weeks are on hard copy.

So I need solicitor recommendations for a LBA Scottish version, it’s over £5k so it’s an ordinary claim. I know I can do it myself but he needs to know I’m not messing around.

For clarity it’s a personal debt but he’s used his investment companies email to send the thank you / promise to pay and it’s from himself and his wife both directors.

I have home, reg office and London reg office address.

Oh he’s said round it up to £10k for the hassle (in writing) so I’ll be claiming £10k but settle for the true debt if it goes to court.

Help me PH - I did a guy a huge favour and at 62 I’m still learning …. It’s beyond belief

Have you actually spoke to him? Emails can be compromised/hacked, apologies if that’s not the case.

To be honest, it sounds like you have fallen for a well practiced con and anything you spend now will be more money wasted.

Definitely need to speak to them if you haven't already done so.

This is a well known hacking scam.

Edit. I'd missed the post in which you confirmed you had. All a bit strange as anyone would have access to phone banking.

I’m helping him buy a £2m house which is going through and I’ve had site of bank statements- I agree it sounds like one but isn’t.

Not when you pay a hotel directly and it fully checks out

Not in Scotland sorry. Different procedures up there.

Probably worth googling Statutory Demand in Scotland and seeing who comes up if you don't get a personal recommendation

Good luck sorting that out. Hopefully not a scam but sometimes some HNW individuals are so far removed from real cost of living/money that they are slow to pay bills.

In your case it was very generous but I wouldn’t have done it. With list cards a quick phone to the bank and things are sorted quickly, particularly if HNW. Sounds a bit fishy in spite of the context you describe.

I agree it sounds totally like a scam which gets worse. They were in Tanzania on holiday and the flight was diverted into Turkey where they were arrested on landing for an unpaid hotel bill for four years ago. The AMEX didn’t pay and he didn’t know and all checks out spoke to the hotel, but you couldn’t make it up. I stepped up because I was available at the time I won’t again.

Separate conversation but I helped him with a contact to overcome an obstacle buying the house

I think I'm beginning to see how he became an HNW.
I would suggest you get some new friends - or as you call them 'distant contact'.

PH has gone down the tubes it used to be so handy. Probably reflects today’s overall attitude of jealousy and bitterness when everyone’s having it so difficult but I still believe in people, must be old.

But you were literally paying on behalf of somebody who had been arrested for non payment of a very large hotel bill and was without the means to pay it ?

What made you think if he behaves that way and was without means that he’d promptly pay you?

Whilst I'm not completely paranoid, could this hotel bill be the conclusion of a longer scam, with the house purchase being the introduction?

The OP says he's "had sight of bank statements" - could they be carefully constructed forgeries?
