My son passed his driving test last week. I contacted my wife's insurance company to get him added as a named driver to the Policy but they've declined to add him on for some unknown reason frown

Can he get his own insurance policy on her car? He did while he was learning (temp cover via Marmalade I think) but it was inordinately expensive. However I'm not sure if you can take out a Policy on a car you don't own.

The other option will be to cancel my wife's policy and then take out a new Policy with both their names on it but that means losing a chunk of the premium we've already paid.

He could get temp cover (Cuvva is one I've used). You dont have to own the car. Not sure how cheap it is, but my sister used to use it to borrow my mums car for a week when they were on holiday etc. Downside is he wont build any no claims.

How long is left on the policy? Does your wife need to extra no claims? If she has max no claims (9 years?) Id be tempted to just cancel it. It would work out cheaper than the temp policy.

Not sure about two policies at the same time full time mjnd you.

Thanks - Ill mention the Temp options but, as you say, that's probably the pricier option.

Mrs C paid £281 for her policy in May and they're offering £120 refund if she cancels. She has something like 10+ years NCD which I assume will transfer if she cancels and then take sout a new policy with another provider?

Firstly you can insure yourself on a car you don’t own - it’s known as non owner insurance - but not all companies will.
Your wife’s current Insurer probably declined to insure him as it’s a material change in information and doesn’t fit with their uw strategy.
As long as you give all the correct information you might find using a broker is easier than trying to use the meerkats.
Someone like Keith Michaels who seems to get mentioned a fair bit.
In the longer run it’s better to try and get your son insured on his own policy and earning his own ncb.
Adding yourselves to “ his “ policy as named drivers and perhaps volunteering a mileage limitation ( say 7k ) will reduce the premium or there may also be the black box addition potential.
I found Admiral “ relatively “ good value for all 3 of our children's cars although they owned them.
