I've read a few people now saying that police no longer enforce road tax. I know from personal experience that there's an automatic fine through the post if you don't either tax or SORN the car, but if you drive around in a SORN car (which is still MoT'd, insured and roadworthy etc), will you be caught, and if so, how much is the fine? I must admit I've forgotten to tax cars several times, and driven them for a few days without tax, and never been pulled over or fined. The only time I've been fined is for forgetting to SORN a car which was broken and couldn't leave my driveway.

Obviously this is a stupid game if your tax is £35 a year, but some people are now supposed to pay £790 a year.

If it goes to court it can be 5x the amount of your VED or £2500 which ever is more, DVLA can settle out of court for £30 + 2x VED

so yeh not worth it.

A couple of weeks ago a DVLA van pulled into the school car park at 1500 and clamped 2 cars that supposedly didn't have VED paid. Never seen this before, but a week later they had also been through our estate and clamped another 3 cars.

We do have a bloke in the estate somewhere who likes to buy scrap Mazdas and park them up. He does seem to have stopped this since they all got taken away one morning at 5am.

I suppose it depends on how lucky you feel ?
Whilst I hear people talking about not paying the TV licence I’ve not heard anyone suggest not paying the RFL.

Chance you take I suppose. You may get away with it if you only drive rural roads with no ANPR. I would expect congested areas with cameras and police presence its only a matter of time before you get pinged.
I suppose if you can plead ignorance and get a fine less than the VED, then you're ok. Not sure the ignorance plea will work several time though!

Insurance can deny a payout for anything other than third party.

We're all law abiding for paying, the mugs are the ones who don't and then get caught by DVLA clamping team, roadside camera check or a neighbour being a good citizen and reporting you to DVLA after checking your car on the DVLA database (Happens more than the bloke in the pub says).

I had a letter from the local Constabulary yesterday saying I drove through a roadside ANPR at 35 in a 30, told me I was a naughty boy but on this occasion they were not taking it any further but to be good in the future.

They would have checked my car was insured and taxed so how lucky do you feel?

Untaxed car can be seized from you at the roadside. Inevitably at the least convenient time ever....

The letter is from the ANPR Project Officer of the Suffolk County Council and has Suffolk Constabulary on the letterhead alongside Suffolk County Council and refers to Suffolk Constabulary in the letter so you may be correct and it is a council generated letter rather than the local constabulary.

The "offence" occurred on the 24th August so took some time reach me .

Looking more closely I think he is correct, it is from the council but they add weight to it by mentioning the local constabulary a few times.

It fooled me anyway, made me feel like a criminal hehe

Thanks, presumably that's 5x the VED for the year, so in the case of someone not paying on a big 4x4 (£790) it'd be a £3950 fine, or £1580 + £30 = £1610?
£30 + 2x VED is only £100 if your road tax is only £35, but then if the tax is only £35 then why wouldn't you pay it!

Several Police forces have the devolved powers to seize 'untaxed' vehicles on behalf of DVLA, so it's not the game of chance I'd like to play.

I thought of this but didn't bother for the reasons mentioned.

basically ur gambling they dont see you. i only tax mine 6 months of th year so pay monthly. during this times its never parked on public road. either drive, work, gym or private car parks on the coast.

I'm pretty sure I'd get away with it but as I can afford to pay u can be sure you'd muck out
