RIP Good Samaritan
Discussion
Bit of a sad thread this one i'm afraid, last night my mates younger brothers aquaplaned and hit the central reservation of the M40 (Could have been the M4).
2 builders saw it happen and they helped get him out of his Punto which was now parked across the outside lane.
While my mate's brother went to their van (which i'm assuming was now parked on the hard shoulder) to get a high vis jacket, the two builders were hit by a car who either didn't see them or ignored their warning, plowing through the two builders straight into the side of the Punto, hitting it with enough force to push the drivers seat onto the passenger seat.
Unfortuantly one of the builders didn't survive and the other is in intensive care, so can I say RIP to the Good Samaritan who died helping and my heart felt condolences to his family. To the other good samaritan can I wish a speedy and full recovery.
Thanks,
Phill
**PS This thread isn't about the driver who's car hit them as I don't know enough details about the accident to comment, this is about the 2 builders who didn't need to stop and help but did. Without whom I don't think my Mates brother would be alive this morning.

I certainly woke up quickly this morning when my mate called.
I know that feeling - a few years ago my brother called me early one morning (which is a bit odd in itself; he's not really a 'morning' person) to ask how I'd gotten home from the pub the night before.
Told him I'd walked, at which point he told me he'd been worried because some mates of ours had been involved in a very nasty car accident late that night and he'd thought I was with them (which I was, earlier). Certainly woke/sobered me up very quickly.

Hope they were all ok!
Just spoken to Phil who was invloved in the accident. The story I heard wasn't totally correct.
He was in the outside lane overtaking when he aqua plained. He hit the hard shoulder very hard and came to a rest across the inside lane with the on coming traffic facing the side of his car.
Still a very nasty accident.

May be a little off topic but has anyone else noticed that, after a good downpour there appears to be a lot of standing water on the roads these days.Is it poor design or build or what.(or is it just me?)Surely the roads (especially m/ways) should be designed to shed the water quickly and not have any "wet spots"?

Very sad. Obviously I don't know the circumstances but the conditions must have been a bit iffy for the aquaplaning incident to have happened in the 1st place. Last place I'd choose to stand in those (or any) conditions would be between oncoming traffic and the crashed car.
Yes, in those circumstances I guess one would tend to wade in and try to help, and your own safety could easily get neglected, unless you're trained for dealing with these situations.
Very sad event anyhow.
Best wishes all,
Dave.

Today was a case in point. It does seem that there is more standing water than there used to be. Perhaps the drains can't cope as well as they used to?

Or they're not cleaned out/maintained as well as they used to be.

I heard a Radio 4 program a little while ago about the problem.
There is a place on the A1 where the M1 goes one way and the A1 the other. I hit a puddle at 80, it looked inoccuous at the time, what hit me was like a Tsunami!!!!!
I moved nearly 2 lanes across, very lucky that the road was empty. I stopped at the next serice area, because I was shook up and grown men were hugging each other!!!!
I am now very wary of these issues. I understand that the council have since taken some action to do something about it.

Und then perhaps ist surface material itself? Recall the "Inside Story" about this?
Und a very very nasty incident. Tragic und heart goes out to family of the builders und your pal as he will feel badly over this too.

My mate has just sent me a picture of the car.
When I get back from uni i'll upload it, i can't seem to get to my ftp server from here.
Its a mess!
No offence but is that really necessary? It’s one thing to offer condolences but something else to post gore pictures.
