Speed camera trashed

Warwickshire device destroyed by arsonists

Trashed
Trashed
A speed camera was destroyed by arson on Monday night, about 23.30. Costing £50,000, the device was situated on the A4091 close to Coleshill, west of Birmingham.

The camera was completely trashed, apparently, after the perpetrators set fire to tyres at its base.

Witnesses did record the event on video, said the police, but so far no-one has come forward to claim responsibility for its destruction.

This follows our story yesterday, where we reported that attacks on speed cameras in the Australian state of New South Wales have become so prevalent that the state government is to install additional cameras to guard speed cameras.

So how do the police know it was filmed, unless the film was given to them by the proud criminal? I assume we don't already have security cameras guarding speed camers?

I have to say on a recent visit to The Peoples Republic of South Yorkshire didn't see many without noticeable soot and scorch marks.

It seems like these things are getting more and more expensive every time one gets destroyed.

Last year they were £20,000, last week they were £40,000 and now they are £50,000. There is some serious cash being generated for someone if they really have doubled in price in a year or so.

Hey don't let safety get in the way of a decent scam, the whole business is as bent as it gets from the alleged cost of these things to the access of the data

perhaps they are using spare space inside the camera boxes to store all the spare cash they're generating?

I would never condone such thoughtful,, erm sorry THOUGHTLESS and irresponsible vandalism. I just hope they are using the money that has been scammed,, erm sorry, fined from the alleged 'speeders' to pay for rapairs. Hopefully when that runs dry they will realise that it is a futile attempt at con - ing the driving population and this is the driving populations uprising.

I love the fact that a £20,000/£40,000/£50,000 (which week are we in?) hi-tech device can be diabled by a 0.01p black bin liner!!

or, as in this case, fire (which is free)!!

How the hell can one of these cost so much, I would like to see some sort of costing breakdown on the scameras, then again if the government have anything to do with it they will doctor the results of the costings.

These scameras must be made of gold with diamonds set in them to cost that much.

Government / police / councils always seem to get ripped of on the cost of everything. If this country were a business, i would have gone bust a long time ago.

I remember where i used to live in Lincolnshire, they were campaigning for a speed bump on a small road near the local kids park. Quite right in my opinion, as it would have made the area a little safer.

The council refused however, stated that a speed bump would cost over £10,000 to be put in place. How the hell did they work that one out?

The Gatso and Truvelo companies must be making a fortune, and if this is how much the government pays for a single camera, how much do they spend on the ANPR Specs cameras?
