I passed a motorcycle policeman the other day in a layby with a portable speed camera set up.
Fair enough, you may think.
However, the stretch of road that it was on, had no speed camera warning signs.
I always thought that this was a requirement, if the Police hope to enforce any speeding fine!
Can anyone confirm?

You mistake their intent as being improvement of safety. If this was the case of course there would be a sign. But as cameras are only in our lives to make money why would they want to warn you one is coming up ;-)
Lots lots more on this in the Speed, Plod & the law forum

I'm afraid you are wrong. The scameras have guidelines which say they should be signed but they are only guidelines - not legally bearing - all spin.
The police are not scameras and have not such guidelines. In fact they don't even need a speed trap. Quick look with the expert eye is good enough.
