The road which links the A14 from Thrapston in Northamptonshire to Peterborough is notoriously noted as a red route. Cameras line the road and there is also regular camera vans hunting down anyone who manages to get through the fixed cameras. I have been done there twice this year.

The first I cannot/couldn't get out of. Fixed camera, tired, 1/2 a mile of 40 zone past around 3 houses on a main road - before going straight back in into a 60. Saw the camera, made sure I was doing 50 and 'flash'. 48 in a 40. 3 points and 60 quid.

The second has wound me up something cronic. Those who know the road in question will know that there are two crawler lanes on this road. I was with a customer I had just shown a car to at the auction in peterborough and was overtaking lorries. As we reached the top of the second crawler lane I accelerated to ensure I was safely past the lorry I was half-way along the side of. As I got to the crest of the hill on the left is a bloody camera van.

I had two choices. Keep going or brake risking hitting the lorry or the possibly having the van hit me that was following me through.

I kept going (customer to think of too) and hoped I had got back in and eased off sufficiently to avoid being done.

No such luck. Some 10 days later I recived the dreaded printout through. 74 in a 60.

Okay then, the van was there for road safety. So why put the thing just over the crest of a hill when people are accelerating up it to pass slower moving vehicles??

I just can't believe just have the nerve to say it is for safety when they put them in conditions such as this.

When will they wake up and smell the beans? It is simply rediculous the way they carry out this and how the hell they expect and sort of respect over cameras is beyond me.

Anyone have similar experiences on this road or any other for that matter?

I think the answer is in the question.

Unfortunately, safety is not an issue with our 'safety' partnerships. They say you should never exceed the speed limit when you are overtaking, even if someone pulls out and is coming towards you in the opposite direction, after all, speed kills, doesnt it?

You only have to look at how much deaths have increased in the main partnership areas, opposed to areas that dont have 'safety' partnerships, seem to see drastic reductions in deaths. Strange that isn't it?

There must be a huge number of miffed people because of this technique. My 3 points came from daring to overtake a caravan in the peak district at one of the few good/safe overtaking spots. Barely over 70 on the wrong side of the road, 3 cars doing exactly the same behind me....obvious candidate for 3 points and an SP60 (which they argue is because I was on the wrong side of the road). If I'd been a stickler I would have jammed on my brakes and nipped (no pun intended!) back in but that would hardly be fair on the guy behind me and could well have caused a shunt further back.

They could have made the road safer there and then by pulling the caravan driver over and telling him to either not accelerate up to 60 on straights or (even better) let the queue of 15 cars past him every few miles.

I'll stop now before my post degenerates into a boring rant.

This also goes on at the top of the A12 past Ipswich towards Lowestoft, where the road goes to single lane for ages and is full of caravans. There are 2 sections where the road widens to 2 lanes to allow slow moving traffic to be passed, there's usually a police bike in the bushes on the way up, always a Gatso on the way back. Safety my ar5e.
