36 in 30 in Lancashire
Discussion
My father was recently done by a Gatso in Lancashire doing an unbelievable 36 in a 30 limit. He says he'd just turned out onto the road and hadn't seen the camera or any warning signs. He's hardly a boy racer, but boy racers know where the cameras are.
He has accepted their kind offer of a speed awareness course at an unrepeatable price of only £90. He now has to go back to Lancashire at a day of their choosing and at a starting time of 8am. Perhaps this is a way of increasing hotel occupancy rates in the county?
He spoke to someone who used to deliver these courses in another county. The guy stopped doing them when he was told by the police that the reason they did them was to make money.
I guess this story is repeated regularly up and down the country. You can argue that he deserves everything he gets for breaking the law, but a moment spent concentrating on road conditions rather than looking for cameras is causing an old man untold worry. This is not the way to get public support for cameras, and it's not the way to make the roads safer either.

Personally, if this were my first or second 3 pointer I'd take the points. £30 cheaper and negligable effect on insurance if any these days. Plus I just couldn't face sitting in a room all day listening to the condesencing claptrap (can you fail one of these courses BTW?).
Also, there's the cost of travelling to Lancashire or whereever and hotel accomodation perhaps. Screw them, take the points.

I totally agree and you should be able to sue them for stress.
As more and more A-B type drivers get done, I'm sure the word will get round to even the pro scam mob that the scams are only in it for one thing.
It amazed me the other day when my mother was whinging about a scam she'd spotted at 7 o'clock in the morning on a deserted road, now if some speedphobe like her is starting to realise the real intentions and tactics of the scam partnerships I'm sure the word must be getting around(well it soon will be as she can talk for England).

I believe you only get the option if it's a first offence.

Oh, yes!
If you can't attend on the day specified, you fail and get the points.
If you are in any way "disruptive", you fail and get the points.
In fact, if you show any signs whatsoever of having a mind of your own, you fail and get the points.

One camera on Blackpool prom got a friend at 34 earlier this year. He was offered the course, which he took. According to this link www.safe2travel.co.uk/speeding/speedcourse.html
that shouldn't have got a caution, but notice that nice little disclaimer under the chart.

You know that, we know that, THEY know that....
Like the nice policeman said.....it's just to make money..
I do feel sorry for anyone who gets shafted by this system. For me, the single speeding charge against me is ten years of driving puts my insurance up by £100 per year for five years.
Even to be a named driver on my girlfriends car, the cost more than doubles for a single SP30!!
So, over ten years of not causing a single accident and driving safely, but with one SP30 I think I have been penalised nearly £1000, due to the conviction supposedly warning me into being a better driver.
On the other hand, my girtlfriend was telling me about two of her friends who between them in 18 months either caused or been partly at fault in 6 separate accidents between them. Ironically, one of them is actually p**sed off because their special 'women only because women are better drivers' insurance company is only going to reduce her insurance by £400 this year, down to £800. Otherwise it would have reduced to £400...
Despite on each of the 6 occasions both of the girls were at fault, by the grace of god, there were no serious injuries. The total cost for repairing the cars is about £20,000. The insurance has paid out each time, and despite the rediculously high accident record for people who only drive 5000 miles per year, *they both have clean licences* so obviously less of a risk to society than me!?

Thanks for the link. I notice that the website states several times that 1 in 3 deaths is speed-related. It also says that a 1mph reduction in speed reduces accident frequency by 5%. It's good to see that they're trotting out all the old chestnuts.

Not all companies do this though. I know there have been variable comments about them on here, but one thing I like about Liverpool Victoria / Frizzell is that they don't even want to know about speeding, unless it was a single incident that resulted in a ban.

I wonder if these are a con - I tried them all for my wife and my daughters cars and, especially for my daughter, they were more expensive. Bizarrely for my daughter Admiral were cheaper than the same groups own women's only insurer, Diamond.

Ist always the way Peter Liebchen
They appear to have cut off as advertised now. prior to this it was 35 mph cut off und per the three blokes at my place of work scammered a 34 mph und 35 mph = most of course when they did this were 33/34 mph und very unhappy over it.
Have placed our guys' reports on course on Paulie's site. It will tell him what to expect as we hear this course has not changed from other people who fell foul of the scam around here.

It's area where there are a lot of scams, ridiculous nit picking to get wrong bums on seats for this course (which of course undermines the whole idea ind reduces soewmthing praiseworthy to negative criticism.

They have four classes per day Monday-Friday. This should tell you level of scamming in the area.
They must make a packet at £90 for each class of 20.
All at 33-35 mph at the time. Now they have more by offering presumably 33- 37 mph as we have heard of a 34 mph invite from a Lancaster based pal. One of our guys had to be there for the 8 am class und had the drive after 11 am "lunch" of spam butties on "Value" sliced bread
according to our guys who are used to lunch in works' gourmet restaurant
after the three hours theory und the others were 11.30 am starts with three hours study, then late lunch followed by drive. Peter Ward said:

I understand, from an insider who ist now informing us,
the ADI receives £200 per session und the ADI drivers about £75 each for the two hour drives with groups of 2/3 from the "class" But at £90 per 4 classes of 20/25 five days per week - they make a tidy profit - nicht?

Ist not way to make roads safer
If they invited the blatters - then yes. But they are inviting the wrong people to these courses und perhaps a BiB may have just given a little lecture over it und that would have been the end of the matter. Tell your Papa not to worry over this course even though it cost more by the nuisance factor of having to book B&B und inconvenience. On positive side all three of our guys said speed was not mentioned - the whole thing was COAST based und despite the resentment und annoyance still over way invite was given, they actually enjoyed the course und the drive.
