driving with injured hand
Discussion
Are there any rules about driving with an injured hand?
I've managed to break a bone in my right hand. I have an automatic, so it is feasible to drive, just wondered if it's illegal. What are the resdient bib's opinion.
It's the second metatarsal-like bone across the back of my hand. I have full motion / pressure availabe between thumb + forefinger, everything else hurts like buggery...
[small]damm, it takes ages to type with just your left![/small]

a) I'm sure driving while unfit (for whatever reason) is a problem, and
b) Given you have sufficient problem to have to ask about it, I would guess its probably bad enough to be a no-no.
Put it this way, would you like to meet yourself coming the other way, having just hit a pothole which gave a kick up through the steering wheel?

There are plenty of one-armed drivers, so it CAN obviously be done safely. However you are not used to it, so it will mean that in your case you are driving with "one and half" hands. Perhaps more problematic is the fact that it hurts as much as you say - as that will distract you.
I'd advise asking your doctor if you can/should drive. I had a broken scaphoid once, but the plaster allowed a fairly good grasp on a steering wheel AND it didn't hurt. I was told I could drive (again I had an auto)

cheers for the replies. It's not too bad, despite being broken, I can still maintain 10-to-2 and if necessary, apply a strong grip (it just hurts).
I'm going to test it up and down the street, and then see how it feels in the morning, unless someone says it's definite no-no. I'm having trouble thinking of anything that the govt hasn't banned / wants to ban...

I broke the third one on my left hand about 15 years ago - falling down the stairs whilst inebriated - and continued to drive.
'Normal' driving was fine, but had I found myself having to take emergency avoiding action I'd have been in trouble.
Mine was never properly set either, so it healed with a curve in it which means that the knuckle is displaced: make sure you get yours looked after.

In addition to the catch all of Reg 104 Con and Use Regs 86 of driving a vehicle in a such a position as not to have proper control that is being used then there is the more serious of failing to notify a relevant disability.
Under RTA 88 S 94 this is defined amongst other problems as " any other disability likely to cause the driving of a vehicle by him in pursuance of a licence to be a source of danger to the public" and as such can lead to the revocation of a Licence following medical examinations by DVLA.
Whilst what I have stated above seems draconian bear in mind it could be in the background if anything untoward occurred.
So for me I would under the terms of my Insurance advise them of the current temporary problem and also have a word with my G.P. to confirm that it is not a serious effect to mobility of the arm.

thanks dvd,
as ever, a veritable mine of information. I really appreciate it.
Got a lift today, and tomorrow so only have to drive on wedenesday. The nurse said it only needs to be elevated in the sling today to reduce the swelling.
I really feel that I'll be sufficiently capable of driving, even swerving violently should I need to but I will chat to insurers + gp just in case.

My Dad badly burnt one of his hands a few years ago, and it took a long time before he could grip the steering wheel properly with it.
In the meantime, he used what I can only describe as a "clamp on knob", which clamped onto the wheel and allowed him to rotate it with one hand. This kind of thing:

Did you get done for drink driving...? How did you manage to land in the drivers seat from the stairs...?
'Twas obviously a double decker bus.....
