Just realised that, for the second night running, I've forgotten to put my new tax disc in the screen. Car is parked on my drive and hasn't been moved since the tax ran out. Bought a new disc on Monday (so I am taxed) but have yet to display it - could I be done for failure to display or does this only apply when the car is on the Queen's highway?

I realise the chance of getting done are generally pretty small, but I have a neighbour that likes to report this sort of thing... she reported my neighbour for similar even though his car was off-road and SORN...

(Note to self: must apply disc to screen this evening...)

The offence is failure to display a valid tax disc so yes you could be done. However it would take a real jobsworth to do you, if you were reported I would go to the press so they could run a "haven't the police got anything better to do with their time" story.

Wiggy, a PNC check on the car would reveal that it IS taxed, so the only knock you'd get from a copper like me would be to check some chav hadn't nicked it!

Surely, failure to display only applies on the road. If you're on private property you don't need to display because that's what the SORN's there for, isn't it?

Wrong, I parked my car with a recently expired tax disc outside the PO whilst I bought it's replacement. Warden gave me a ticket, luckily I caught him just in time with the new disc in my hand. "Why didn't you park in the car park? you'd have been ok there" he said. Car park not queens highway therefor not liable for tax.

Mrs M got her tax disc online on 31st of the month at approx 9pm.
The disc didn't arrive until 3 days later. As luck would have it she got stopped for something else (number plate). The copper wasn't interested in the expired disc, as his PNC showed the car as taxed

Section 33 Vehicle Excise & Regsitration Act 1994 that deals with display of Licence clearly states that this only applies whilst the vehicle is on a Public Road i.e. one repairable at public expense - so some car parks etc will not apply. A private drive, unless the Council repair it does not qualify.

Thanks all. My common sense told me that this would be the case. It then told me that this is Blair's Britain (PLC) and I should probably check...

Thanks again

The tax disk on my bike has never been attached, it lives under the seat - never had a problem.

I just buy them online, in advance and forget to put them on for a few weeks.

Why do we now need to display them anyway? You don't have to display your telly licence in the window of your house or whatever.

don't push your luck, what these fackers will do, is tow your car to some god forsaken place, and charge you for the service. it nearly happened to me when i was on holiday, someone nicked the tax disk from my van after forcing a quarter light, then the council put an intention to remove warning, then some other toe rag jumped in before the council could act and removed my van, never to be seen again. it wasn't worth much, but i had just put a new mp3 cd/radio in it, so i wasn't exactly chuffed.

of course the person to blame is the thief, but if the council had checked with dvla, before advertising the fact my vehicle was dumped, it would still have been there when I got back from my holiday. Further to this the council did send someone to remove it, but it had already gone, so they don’t check with dvla at any stage
