Hi guys. I was wondering what the penalty is (and how aggressiveley it would be enforced) for driving a vehicle with a greater size than your licence allows. ie a C class lorry on a B licence.

That is a major offence. penalty unknown, but a ban would be likely. Consider also that you would not be insured.

That's an offence that they give little or no leeway on non prosecution.

S87 RTA 88 - Driving otherwise in accordance with Licence issued. (Group not covered).

Max £1000 fine and 3 -6 points.

Won't effect Insurance as clause in Policy generally states "providing holds or has held a Licence to drive" Does not break down to specific Groups.

My (car) policy states as one of the exceptions that you must 'hold a license to drive such a car' which sounds reasonable to me - eg if you only hold an automatic license then you won't be insured for a manual car. Are you really saying that if you're not licensed to drive a big lorry the insurance will pay out if you crash?

Dexter

It will depend of course just exactly what is stated in the policy. I note what you say and like the DOC clause they could well be tightening up as yours specifically states.

I have seen "open" clauses as I stated to cover any Licence holder to drive other vehicles. In fact, many moons ago, when dealing with someone who did not have a UK Licence but a domestic, wrote to the Insurance Company concerned who replied that as he had held "a Driving Licence" then they were prepared to cover.
