M-way speeds to be cut?
Secret proposal for strict 70mph regime
Speed limits could be more heavily enforced on motorways in future, if the Government's plans come to fruition. The aim is sid to be to help Britain achieve its manifesto commitment to cut carbon-based emissions by 20 per cent by 2010. However, reactions are likely to be negative, given the experience of cash cow speed cameras.
The proposal is just one of many new measures that are outlined in a confidential review of the Government's climate change policies which was obtained by The Guardian newspaper.
How would it help? According to the document, stricter enforcement of the 70mph limit would save 890,000 tons of carbon a year, claimed to save more than the obligation to mix renewable biofuels into petrol for vehicles, which was announced last week, and other measures combined.
The motorway speed limit proposal and other potential measures, including the implementation of double summertime, are aimed at saving an extra 11m-14m tons of carbon pollution each year. Other potential ways of cutting pollution mentioned in the document including increasing electricity generation from offshore wind turbines and combined heat and power systems, stricter enforcement of building regulations and linking winter fuel payments for pensioners to energy efficiency measures.
Reactions included the AA Motoring Trust, which said that it would take a big political leap to win hearts and minds, and that the Government would struggle to convince people that the aim was about cutting pollution rather than raising revenue.
Of course, persuading car companies to all fit a long overdirve top ratio for motorway speeds could help.

Whats that as a percentage? More importantly, when Kyoto's all said and done and they've spent trillions over a coupla three decades to implement it what will they have done, slowed the inevitable by 3-5 years? Crap happens in 54 years instead of 50 years?
How about planning for the inevitable instead of trying to stop it?
What a load of b*ll*x.
Stop two boat loads of immigrants coming in a month and they would save on both emissions and financial drain on the economy.
What about; industry? airlines? even HGV's?
How many motorists vote?
How many feel penalised time after time after time? Road Tax, not used (100%) on roads, Fuel Tax - daylight robbery..
Hey, won't the anti smoking laws mean more people polluting the air too??

Are they going to be monitoring what gear you drive in now?
I smell a black box.........
I argued in another thread that cars with larger engines may not become less efficient at higher speeds. Application of the usual government spin could result with larger engined cars being banned - "these cars are more efficient at dangerous speeds"; I can see the banners now: 'let's make owning sporty/luxury cars as anti-social as drink driving'
By the same token, should we all speed up in lower speed limit zones? Driving at 30/40 is well below the typical peak efficiency speed of most cars.
How much CO2 is pumped out by other sources worldwide and how do these compare to our cars?
Worse still, why must only UK drivers bend over backwards when other much larger countries (greater travelling distance), with much larger populations (many more cars), who own much larger cars (huge antique guzzlers), with much cheaper petrol (50c/litre), simply don't give a to55
This is worth fighting against until we know it canmake a real difference!
Ever heard about a fart in a hurricane? A drop in an ocean?
This makes about as much sense as pissing into the wind.
OK@£$@£$, EDIT:
I've tried making the following posts several times over several minutes but it doesn't work, so heres to an edit instead!
hmm, dunno whats wrong with this board, so many times I post a message and it just doesn't appear, sometimes it takes time to show up, other times other posts dissapear... database issue?
Anyway, heres what I tried posting several times.
"I was just thinking, I remembered that there are coal fires in China that have been raging for close to a century etc... anyway, the quickest of google searches came up with this:

The coal fires in China alone put out as much CO2 etc as all the cars in the united states!
Were talking millions, nay probably billions of tonnes of carbon every year just through fires in coal mines in one country... what was that? They wanted to cut a few hundred thousand tonnes a year by ensuring no one exceeds 70 mph and enforce it strictly?
Good one."

Why not promote LPG conversions with govt grants to convert your car much as you do to insulate your loft, at the same time promising an amnesty for tax increases till 2020
Why not offer tax incentives to electric vehicles (I know they use electricity from a poluting, possibly coal fired power station but it'll end up as nuclear eventually once they greenies have all been shot)
Ever notice how these 'measures' impinge on our freedom more and more
