Received in the post a notice of intended prosecution from Kent police. On returning from France last week with a car full of wine, I was merrily ambling up the M20 with CC set to just over 75, as I wasn't in a rush and the car was pretty heavy. At Hollingbourne it seems that I entered the roadworks and a 50mph limit at a speed of 77mph which has attracted attention of plod, who was sitting on a bridge over the motorway. I commented at the time that I hadn't seen any 50mph sign but I had seen the speed limit ahead signs that run though the road works. The people in the car with me acknowledged the same. Before entering the roadworks I had reduced my speed to under 50mph and watched the build up of traffic and lorries behind me! I am hoping that anybody who uses the road can verify if there are any 50mph signs on the road prior to the signs that are located exactly where the roadworks start. It may be that I just didn't see them (nor any of my colleagues) but if they are actually there, then they must be hidden away someplace! Any help would be really appreciated as I currently enjoy a clean licence and I'm obviously a little agreived about this scenario.

Time to ask for the evidence, with a statement from the officer quoting the "exact" location.

A friend received a NIP recently for doing 50mph, in strangely a 50 limit n(as noted on the nip!!!!), he informed them asap & they appeared to have dropped it.

If it was me I'd take another wino trip to check the location....

I was driving on Monday evening along the M4 approaching the Bryn Glas (sp?) tunnel westbound, and saw a 50mph (advisory) flashing matrix sign ahead of me on the overhead gantry. As I passed under the gantry and was about to enter the tunnel, I saw a mandatory 50mph sign for (non-active) roadworks right at the entrance to the tunnel.
It would not have been possible to slow to 50 before entering the tunnel without endagering following traffic, and I don't believe that I missed any other signs warning of the 50mph speed limit.

For the roadworks Highways Agency for that area of M Road would have to get a Temporary Traffic Order covering the works. This will stipulate in detail the exact length of road involved i.e. staring and finishing point. By your confirmation it will contain a speed restriction the start of which will be where the road works start. This is the point where 50 sign should be. Can you get evidence that they are not there? The advanced 50 ahead signs will no doubt be outside the limit of Order, unless stated otherwise in the Order and in any case they are not the authorised sign for the actual start of the speed restriction.

I drive that piece of the M20 regularly and all I can say is there were] signs there at one stage. Haven`t really noticed whether they are there or not at the moment as slowing for the roadworks has become habitual.

Thanks Towman. If you happen to be passing that way in the near future, would you do me a favour and see where they are.

Cheers
