Saw an accident, couldn't stop, who should I contact?
Discussion
Think this is probably the right place...
I saw a small SUV drive straight into the end of a tailback on the M1 t'other night, and it's pretty clear to me that the driver wasn't paying attention and that's exactly why it happened.
I'd quite like to make sure the two people who had their cars shunted on the end of the queue keep their NCB, in the circumstances...
Problem is though:
I was in the outside lane of the motorway at the time, and the accident was in the middle lane RIGHT next to me. However my lane and the middle lane ahead started moving so I would have caused an accident myself if I'd tried to fight across three lanes to stop on the shoulder. I could see that all the drivers were moving about and didn't look in pain so I decided not to stop.
(How the cars involved managed not to snake at all given that the SUV had not braked at all from motorway speeds, I don't know.)
Because it was right next to me and in thick traffic, I couldn't see license plates because of the angle of view (side-on) and the other cars.
So, I'd like to give witness statement, however vague, to someone (I do have a BIT more detail than I've given here) - but who? Highways agency? The plod? Some sort of central insurance agency?
