I'm surprised it's taken so long, given the appalling standard of driving in the county, but Cumbria's just received it's first pair of fixed speed cameras, near the Howgate/Brewsters pub on the A595, Workington to Whitehaven stretch.

To any not in the know, this is a rather dodgy road, from Carlisle to the west coast (Workington, Whitehaven), then down to BNFL Sellafield. The local council seem to have the 'winning hearts and minds' campaign on the go already, having put up a few signs ('A595: 1245 casualties in 5 years').

They seem smaller than the fixed cameras I've seen elsewhere, but they're still plenty visible enough.

So Cumbria's fallen as well. Perhaps we can expect a spate of new cameras just before the Government tells us that there won't be any more....

BTW, what's the definition of a "casualty"? Is it a sum of K, SI and I? Or something else that's not directly comparable (not that I'm suspicious of course, oh no)?

Casualties ...... 1245 in 5 years - of course this includes everything from a cut finger to a decapitated driver. Don't you just love statistics

Wasn't aware of the cameras on the Kendal/Windermere road - the ABD website refers to mobile radar guns on the A591 though - then again it doesn't mention the 595, so it may be out of date? I'll have to be on the lookout next time I'm there (not very often, tbh).

At Ings
... But we ain't sure if our sub-marinated trio actually switched on as the van's still there from time to time

As for the "casualties" at Ings ... - the local press reports do not report as per our SpeedFinder General....as they all report the accidents as outside the enforced area and two were heart attacks, one a fall asleep and 7 local busy body blokes in the pub campaigned for the 40 mph at Ings ....

Try their website Full of "stats". He's honest enough to report teh County's KSI rate has increased since they "took over". His site map of locations is a bit ropey - but at least his timetable for the vans is reasonably correct. M6 raises most cash as far as we can gather.

Hmm, cumbriasafetycameras.org reports four fixed sites in Cumbria as 'pending', which I guess means it's either not updated, or the cameras aren't operational yet. It also has some stats in the placement criteria:

A590 Millside, KSI 4, PIC 5 - pending;
Salthouse Road, Barrow, KSI 4, PIC 4 - pending;
A591, Ings, KSI 5, PIC 12 - pending;
A595, Howgate, KSI 5, PIC 8 - pending.

I can't think of any justification for the M6 traps, other than revenue generation

Isn't there a couple on the A69 between Newcastle and Carlisle?

There are a couple on the A69 on the dual carriageways/crawler lanes around the Hexham area, and there's one eastound just at Haydon Bridge before the road turns from a 30 to NSL. The Haydon Bridge one spent several years burned out, but has since been replaced.

There are a couple on the A590 between the Kendal area and Grange - where the dual carriageway changes to single carriageway for a couple of miles or so. They only appeared a couple of weeks or so ago. The heads are painted yellow but are NOT reflective, so beware.....

We've had a few deaths on the A595 from Cockermouth to Wigton, however these have occurred on the twisty sections and when I asked the Cumbria Safety Scameras why they still stick there vans on the long straight sections where no accidents occur they said they have to have a long straight section to operate from. I am amazed that as these vans are supposed to be 'SAFETY' orientated and about saving lives, so why don't they stick them at the start and end of the twisties thus ensuring they do highlight potential bad bends etc. Of course this won't bring in any revenue but the satisfaction of knowing that in these positions lives actually might be saved might get a bit more support from the public.
Personally I would like to see the council erect big clear warning signs stating the number of deaths that have occurred at these corners just to warn unsuspecting motorists to take it easy.

That's been there a long time, possibly over a year...

...and is one of the few sensibly placed cameras I can think of. It's in the middle of the new 40 stretch where there are shops and a garage - helps slow people down after tatering it through the wilderness for the previous 10 miles.

The people who live in Ings though so highly about being made so "safe" by the vans that they used to text us to warn us!

Ist not a NEW 40 mph stretch - been there a long time und was decided by 7 men down the pub

NO speed related accident has ever occurred there - und the ones which did in the NSL beyond were reported in the local papers as "result of heart attack" und one nod off affter strenuous activities on the fells - he did not take enough sleep

We've lived in und driven all over this county for over 20 years now - we know most roads here "intimately und to the pothole und wear" now!

Our sub marinated Liebchen claims accidents happen when you overtake on straights und not deceptive bends He apparently caused keyboards to overload when he said this on the now defunct CSCP forum

Ist all about cash - we all know this. Not safety But in any case - there are photos on Paulie's site showing how they hide in the bushes on the straights - courtesy of one more local to Big Lake with a speed limit on it due South of us.

The 40mph limit at Ings is a good thing, there is a petrol station, a bus stop, a pub and several junctions with crap visibility, whether anybody has been ksi'd there or not is irrelevant.

IMO the 7 "busybodys down the pub" had a good idea.

There are a lot of visitors to the lakes and 99% of them won't have intimate knowledge of every pothole/hidden hazard on the roads, the limit runs for less than a mile anyway

Dave, (lived 2 miles from Ings for 20yrs, and a petrolhead)
