A sub-continental colleague has lived in this country for a few years. He has an Indian driving licence which, of course, is useless now, as he has lived here for more than one year. He wants to take his test to get a UK licence, and so is going to get a provisional licence and book a few lessons.

Now, he has just got married and brought his blushing bride back from India. This is her first time in Britain, so her Indian driving licence entitles her to drive in the UK for a year (does it?). But, does her Indian licence also qualify her to supervise a learner ie her husband, so that he can get some experience between lessons?

DVLA said:
Learner drivers must be supervised. To supervise a learner driver you must be at least 21 years old and have held a full EC licence for the appropriate category of vehicle for at least 3 years. Anyone who does not comply with these requirements could be liable to a maximum fine of £1,000, discretionary disqualification or 3-6 penalty points (as could the learner driver).

So no she cannot legally supervise him.

That'll teach me not to "speed read" web pages! I looked at that page and completely missed the EC licence bit. D'oh!
