Could someone please clarify for me the law relating to the carriage of children in motor vehicles.

Is there a compulsion to use Child seats for children of certain ages in the rear, and an age limit for the use of normal seat belts in the front seat?

It really does wind me up when people are driving along with small kids unrestrained in the car, this is where cameras would actually come in useful, photgraph the car, with the offending unrestrained child and issue the driver with a £60 fixed penalty,(and maybe even 3 points) simple as that. All it takes is one hard brake and that child will end up through the windscreen.

Never mind this speed kills crap, lack of child restraints kill.

Oh and also photograph and fine the numpties at Blackpool that allow thier kids to stick their heads out through the sun roof during the illuminations.

I went past a Dutch-registered Mondeo in lane 2 on the M1 yesterday, doing 70ish (I was making slightly - and only slightly - better progress in lane 3) with an ankle-biter standing in the front footwell looking over the dashboard. Mummy didn't have a seatbelt on either.

OI DARWIN! You missed one...
