On the M6 last NIGHT i saw an idiot in a stickered up Highways Agency 4x4 happily plodding along WITHOUT ANY LIGHTS ON. So how exactly are we supposed to trust these idiots to do anything about traffic management and dangerous driving, considering one of their own was disrupting traffic and driving more dangerously than anything ive seen in my road career?

What level of training are these guys supposed to have?

Good question. Also, what do they do when there are no incidents to attend to? Do they cruise along wasting fuel, or park up and wait for something to happen?

This is the official line: www.highways.gov.uk/knowledge/1968.aspx

Personally, I can't see why they drive around in vehicles that (to the less observant motorist - ie 90% of them) might be mistaken for a Police patrol. Big 4x4's, complete with "Battenburg" markings and strip light on the roof. Cue random braking.

Surely a big yellow Transit van would have sufficed?

They cannot stop you for any offences, or issue fines etc.

I read on the back of a toilet door (in a service station) that non compliance is a criminal offence. I've seen a couple on the roads and honestly thought they were police cars until the traffic built up and slowed down enough to read all the bits and bobs on the cars.
