Girlfriend got a NIP in the post yesterday. 83mph in a temp 50mph on the M4 J8/9. Any ideas how many points that will be? My guess is 6.

Cheers

6 points would be in line with the current Magistrates Guidelines and probably a £200-£300 pounds fine, possibly less, possibly more - depends on the Magistrates on the day, mitigation, g/f's stated incomings vs outgoings etc. At 83 in a 50, the Mags also have the power to impose a short ban..

Of course if the NIP was ignored completely, your g/f would be liable for prosecution for a S172 offence - failing to furnish driver details. This currently carries a 3 point endorsement, a typical fine of £250-£350 (max £1000 - but almost unheard of) and an MS90 conviction on the licence. Some insurance companies do not like MS90's and may hike her premium - you'd have to check...online quote with a few insurance companies, maybe ??

You have 28 days to respond to the NIP, use the time wisely and have a wander over to www.pepipoo.com to have a read of the options available...

What state of mind was she in to be doing that sort of speed there? Those roadworks have very prominently sited Gatsos on both carriageways and plenty of speed camera signs as well

Do they not do the automatic ban for doing 30mph over the limit in a temporary 50mph limit section.

F**k knows, I wasn't in the car at the time. But if her normal standard of driving is anything to go by, 'on another planet' would be my best guess of her state of mind !!

Oh well, hopefully they won't be too hard on her, she has had a clean licence for 11 years.

This is not helpful I know and I hate the use of cameras for enforcement but....

We broke down in those roadworks last weekend and were helped by the traffic control (not Highways Agency). We travel that way every day.

I have to say having been in the area for an hour I see why they have the 50 limit and given how well and for how long its posted I have no sypmathy for anyone caught. Unrealistic limits are useless but to protect a workforce they should be obeyed. To be stood that close (as the workers are) to that traffic is simply staggeringly frightening and people drive like maniacs. For the hour we were there people treated the limit as a joke, a number of cones were clipped and the camera may as well have been a driving test emergency stop test.

To all the workers there god save you, being stood with you gives a great perspective and it now annoys me more than ever those drivers who take the moral highround by doing 70 in the middle lane everywhere. You kno who I mean you pass them on the motorway at 80... slow to 50 in the roadworks and they sail past for you to overtake again when its clear and the conditions are safe to make good progress.

I hate the cameras but maybe rather than 3 points we should stand you by the cones! You may all disagree, but spend some time stood out there and than make a judgment.

I got done for 83 in a 50 about 7 years ago, on the M2.

Magistrate gave me a choice between 6 points + £200 fine or 7 day ban + £200 fine. I took the ban.
