I've just seen a road safety advert aimed at teenagers!

The kids are fooling around on the pavement, being filmed by a phone camera. Suddenly one of them walks off into the road and is hit by a car. The wording at the end says that 55 teenagers a week wish they had given the road their full attention.

Firstly, that's a great message. So much better than focusing on the driver. There was no indication of the car speeding, or that the driver could have avoided the teenager. The blame was put on the pedestrian. Amazing!

But secondly, where's the figure of 55 come from? Are there 55 teenagers killed per week? I don't think so. So perhaps it refers to KSIs? Unfortunately there was no indication as to exactly what is being referred to. It's this type of sensationalism that says that each death "costs taxpayers £1.5m". The target audience is clever enough to realise when they're being misled and the advert could backfire.

Sum up? So near, yet so far.

Been showing on TV for a while now..Still makes me shudder when the kid gets hit by the car. Not nice..

Now if only that were true. Unfortunately, I think our govt and its agencies see the British populus as none too bright and easily persuaded by a bit of spin. Sadly, in many cases, they are probably right..

When I was growing up (60s/70s) there were lots of public information films specially targetted at children using roads (e.g. Green Cross Code and Tufty).
Nowadays we seem to put the onus completely on drivers to avoid collisions - I think it is symptomatic of the blame culture which seems to be creeping more into our lives and the CYA response to it.

I'm sure there is some truth in what you are saying - but are you sure your age isn't a factor? Adverts and PR are placed where the target audience will see them. You are now an adult so will tend to see things aimed at adults. As I say, your basic point is probably correct though this is the second campaign of late aimed at teenagers - did you see the model/rapper campaign a short while ago?

What you say could well be true but they seem to be the exception and quite sporadic. Maybe I have rose tinted specs but I do remember road safety being reinforced as a responsibility of the pedestrian as much as the driver.

Their continuing presence in the House of Commons suggests its true.

Still, we have our enabling bill and elections being cancelled to come .... can't think who that reminds me of.

I'm with you, there Whitney. What ever happened to the Cycling Proficiency Test? (I still have my badge!).
Also, at regular intervals, Plod used to turn up and put on a Road Safety show at my Primary School, part of which involved a pursuit MG Magnette doing a real 'Emergency Stop' in the playground. Cool!

To answer my own question, bleeding-heart Liberals removing any form of competition or 'elitism' from school life and the BiB being terminally underfunded - sorry, made more efficient, by a string of useless Chancellors.

Our local schools still have the Cycling Proficiency Test, my brother past his last year.
