In tonight's Shropshire Star

Shropshire could be in line for a host of new speed cameras in a bid to cut down serious and fatal collisions on the county’s rural roads.

West Mercia Safety Camera Partnership is in talks with council highway bosses over installing new speed traps on A and B roads with high numbers of crashes and injuries.

The move has been made possible by new regulations into the way crash hot spot locations can be selected.

Roads being considered for new controversial speed traps are the B4364 between Ludlow and Bridgnorth; A442 between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster; A525 between Whitchurch and Wrexham; B4371 between Much Wenlock and Church Stretton and the A458 between Cross Houses and Much Wenlock.

Trevor McAvoy, of the camera partnership, said they wanted to concentrate on dangerous rural and minor roads, which in many cases are subject to the 60mph national speed limit.

He said motorists often drove too fast on certain stretches of the roads, even though they were not breaking the limit.

“It’s quite a difficult debate and it may well be we will find that perhaps the problems are different and that other solutions are appropriate,” he said.

I thought the expansion of scameras has been stopped. Any comments?

Thread hijack, there was a bod on breakfast TV this morning talking about public service films from the past, green cross code and all that. I was shocked to hear that there isnt any saved footage of Reginald Molehusband. How on earth such an important part of our national heritage like this can have been overlooked from the archives is shocking. Anyway, can you get in touch with the BBC and let them take a copy of your home movies or something?

So what, exactly, is the point of installing scameras at these locations then ???

Surely either the road is in need of some re-engineering, or the limit is too high for the particular stretch of road (Can't believe I said that....)

You noticed that too. I guess the hidden msg here is that first they will reduce the limit then they will install the cameras.

Balmoral - I've got a MP3 recording of the sound track if you're interested - sad eh? It's not good quality though! "Bus drivers and taxis changed their routes to avoid him....."
