I hear to my chagrin that the UK has a reciprocal agreement with ROI for applying points to licenses obtained in the other country.

Anyone know how this works in practice? Can the Garda look up a UK plate on the DVLA database? If not, how do they go about finding out who you are and subsequently applying the points if you are no longer in the country?

I think that you are refering to The Crime (International Co0-0peration)Act 2003
which brought in disqualifications in NORTHERN IRELAND, Channel Isle and Gibralter
effective in UK as it is in that part of the world. Previously a person disqualified could drive with impunity in England despite being disqualified in their own country.

It also allows endorsements of that country to be recorded with interchange of the information.

Haven't seen as yet Eire on the same lines but harmonisation of traffic law is being worked on within the EEC.

Interesting DvD. Our Darling was suggesting that there were a few countries where a reciprocal agreement was in place (with the UK being half of each) and mentioned Ireland by name.

Perhaps he was talking about NI but being deliberately vague.
