A46 - Non standard temporary speed limit signs
Discussion
Anyone else noticed that the temporary signs on the A46 between M40 and Coventry in the roadworks (including the all important initial signs and repeaters) are of a non standard format?
They look good, but the font for the numbers isn't quite right.
Anyone care to comment on the legality of these signs? No, I haven't been 'done'

puggit,
I've noticed. Don't suspect it would make a blind bit of difference if one was to be caught mind you. I stick to 50, because you never know what's lurking, especially in the lay-by on the M40 bound side, just before the Warwick/IBM junction. It still amazes me how many people fly past not really bothering to heed the temporary limit. IMHO, this is the place where someone is most likely to be caught.
Cheers

I think the assumption is that they would be on the bridge rather than in the layby, though you might be right.
What gets me -- and perhaps others -- is that the 50 limit comes in 1/2 mile before the roadworks. What is the point of that? It seems to be becoming more common as well, eg. A45, M1 southbound near Northampton. Is this to protect us from the potential queues that might build up? If so, why not have a "queue ahead" sign that is switched on when there is a queue? Or just trust drivers to brake if they see a queue? Now there's radical, trusting drivers. Instead, they achieve nothing -- 50 is too fast if there's a hidden queue, and irrelevant if not.
A local road has a temporary speed limit of 30mph (normally 40 and 50 over the stretch). All the "30" signs are the same size (somewhere between the start of limit and repeater sizes). Most have no maker's identification marking. None are illuminated. The signs are irregularly spaced. One can enter the restricted road from side roads that bear only the standard "40" or "50" signs (the travel nearly 1/2 mile before seeing a "30" sign). Two over-limit flashing "40" reminders are still operating. Is the temporary limit enforceable? - Streaky
I took another look at these signs today. Not only is the typeface incorrect -- and the specs I've seen for signs are very specific -- but they also have large logos and names printed on the back. I recall seeing that signs must only have small text on the back. Now would a magistrate take this seriously or not? I don't know, but I would hope so.
