Car Wars
Wed 29 Mar, 9:00 pm - 10:00 pm 60mins

On the road with Manchester's elite Tactical Vehicle Crime Unit - 20 officers specially trained in catching gangs who use stolen cars to commit burglaries, robberies and ram raids.

Tackling one of the country's highest rates of car crime and violence, the Manchester force is uniquely allowed to use unmarked high performance cars to track the criminals. But the tactics are controversial: hot pursuit often ends in injuries and deaths, which leaves officers on the ground with the difficult decision - to chase or not to chase?

Narrated by Jamie Theakston.

My friend from GMP (who's in it) relaiably informs me that this is better than the first one that was on three or four weeks ago, and the next episode should be aired the week after next.

BBC1, 2100 Wednesday 29 March 2006.

Cheers Dibs, thanks for that. Was wondering if there were going to be any more, or if I had missed them. Tuned in the week after the first one expecting the second episode, and was disapointed.

Made me mad watching that programme. Makes my blood boil to see such scabby little blingers just doing what they like and getting away with it.

The scrote who crashed and got trapped i found to be a particularly pathetic piece of crap.
Why they bothered to get his worthless butt outa the car i dont know. Big crying pussy.

The other innocent guy was trapped for ages.
Pisses me right off. I hate car thieves with a passion.

The tw*t they caught at the end had 20 convictions for ram-raiding.

20 FFS!!!

Not including the one they got him for on this programme.

Call me old fashioned, but what the FK was he doing on the streets?

He didn't look older than about 25.

He may be a blinged up, chavvy, thieving scumbag, but if this is the only punishment he and his ilk get, who's really to blame?

Ooooooohhhhhh - it makes me mad!!!!

I would be much more interested to know how many of those deaths occured like the crash in the programme and how many are caused by the police car hitting something.

As the guy said, "We can't have a situation where we cannot follow criminals as soon as they step into a car".

What really pissed me off was the comments from brake
In particular those that “the criminals are scared….” When being chased

Sorry………….NO, they are not scared they love it, they deliberately set out to bait the police, they know the area, they know what they are doing, they do it for kicks and by beating the police they gain elevated status in their sad little peer groups.

Are the police not supposed to chase them? oh great! By not doing so, the door opens to create lawless ghettos, which virtually exist

Perhaps brake should come into the real world and have a day/night out in weaste, ordsal cheetham hill, strange ways, longsight, levenshulme, moss side and see the lawlessness that exists related to cars and come up with some concrete plans to tackle it rather than the usual diatribe that they spout

I'm pretty new to this forum so if this has been done to death let me know the link and i'll shut up

However much we all detest and want these "scumbags" caught, in my mind one death of an innocent person wether in the car being chased or otherwise is not acceptable. High speed chases should not occur.

Watched this last night, great programme, but one bit made my blood boil.

When they caught the ram raider who was driving the Saab 9000, they said he had over 20 convictions for ram raiding.

He was all of 20 years old - so clearly hasn't served any more than about 5 minutes jail time for his 20 convictions. Here's an idea, actually send him to prison so that he can't continue to offend.

At the end it said "two men were arrested in the ram raiding offense, both pleaded guilty". Of course they did, just like the 20 other times, safe in the knowledge they'll be out to do it again in next to no time. How on earth does the CPS manage to get it so horribly wrong?!

Agree that one death (innocent or not) is not acceptable, but the concept of criminals knowing that all they have to do is drive fast and the police will not try and catch them is even more unacceptable. I would not ever want it to be me or mine that were the innocent victim of a high speed car chase accident, but I would rather than than be the victim of a crime where the criminal knows he'll get away just by driving quickly.

Exactly, otherwise you could just rob a bank, but plan your excape routes on roads where you could exceed the speed limit! It would create lawlessness!

'Control, the suspect has broken the speed limit, it is not safe to proceed, I am breaking off the chase...'

Whilst no-one wants to put innocent peoples lives at risk, the police need *some licence* to effectively police our streets and protect us from crimes which also affect us.

As I understand it there are very few cases where the police car has a collision, despite the number of pursuits, but it still counts as a police accident if they are following/pursuing when the bandit car crashes. I think this is unfair and misleading, but apparently that is how the system records these events.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Quote from BBC News archive.........

'The number of people killed or injured in collisions involving police cars is up 60% in England and Wales.
In the year up to April 2004, more than 2000 people were injured and 31 people died in such accidents.'

How many were 'scumbags' how many had nothing to do with the chase?

Of the 'scum' that died what offence had they committed to warant the 'death penalty'?

If these 'scum' were caught what major crimes would have been solved?

My personal view is too light a penalty for actually not stopping for the BiB.
There are other ways to catch these people without high speed chases.

In which case you're saying "the criminals have won."

Oh, BTW, AFAIAC no-one in the car being chased is innocent. I for one don't give a toss if they're all killed. More oxygen for me. I do feel sorry for genuinely innocent people they may hit along the way, but car criminals? Who gives a sh*t? Not me.

Who cares? If they'd stayed in the pub, they'd still be alive.

Why are you so supportive of criminals?

As said in the program, that is their choice. No one is forcing them to drive in such a dangerous manner. They are risking their own lives (and that of others). They are in effect pulling the trigger themselves, no one is sentancing them to this fate. All they have to do is stop...
