I'm sure that this has probably been answered before, but what are the rules about warning signs for mobile cameras. Everybody I speak to has a different views. Some say they are needed, and must be placed at a certain distance from the camera. Others that they are not needed at all.

Can anybody shed any light on this please?

Extract from Handbook of Rules and Guidance for the National Safety Camera Programme:

Rule 3: Signing rules

For fixed speed camera and red-light camera sites, the first camera warning sign must be placed not more than 1 km from the first camera housing in the direction being enforced.

For mobile sites, camera warning signs must be placed in advance of the point of entry to the site or route (including or excluding minor roads at the discretion of the partnership) in the direction being enforced.

Failure to abide by this ‘guideline’ is no defence for the accused, but the ‘rule’ must be obeyed if the SCPs want to net off from that site (this is likely to change next year when the SCPs get direct funding instead of netting off)

If it's Police enforcement (not SCP) they wouldn't need the signs though.
